When I was in the Navy (many, MANY years ago), the rivalry between sailors and Marines was pretty legendary, even encouraged by our respective superiors up to a point. But, I'd like to say something to my fellow veterans about the Marines.

I knew several Navy Hospitalmen (corpmen) while I was in the Navy. Those who served with Marine units spoke highly of the Marines they served with. They all spoke about the extent two which the Marines in their units went to protect them. Marines - and I mean all of you - thank you for the care and protection you gave my brother sailors who served with you. Your dedication and commitment to them has not and will not be forgotten.

In addition, even in those days, there was something that we sailors would admit to ourselves - when it comes to a fight . . . . or a war, you can't lose with the Marines on your side.

Marines, happy birthday and thank you for all of the sacrifices you have made over the centuries. God bless you all. This squid is proud to know you.

Semper Fi, Marines!!

Happy Birthday, Marine. SOme of my best friends were with 1st Bn, 9th Marines in Vietnam. They were given the name, The Walking Dead. I was with a Marine Helo squadron there in '69...

Semper fi to an older brother.

I also was able to wish a Happy Birthday to the oldest Marine I know, who served from about 1925 to 1947. He turned 98 last May.

To be a Marine you gota be mean! I don't know what I been told, but Eskimo...

Old core Jarhead says, "Semper Fi.. OOOOOHRAAA!"

As far as the Gulf war goes, "Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition, we're on a mighty mission."

WASHINGTON (AP) President Bush has authorized the Joint Chiefs to draw up a battle plan to liberate France again. Facing an apparent overwhelming force of up to 400 angry teenagers, military experts doubt France's ability to hold out. "If the last two world wars are any indication, I would expect France to surrender any day now", said Joint Chiefs head, Gen. Peter Pace. He warned the President that it might be necessary to send up to 5 Marines to retake the country. “We’ve asked for volunteers, but we’re having a hard time finding even one Marine to help those ungrateful bastards out for a third time.”

Actually, Forrestal wanted the original as a souvenir for himself. Colonel Chandler Johnson wasn't about to give the first flag to the SECNAV so he ordered a replacement be taken to the summit, securing the original, and that it be a larger one.

"then, how did the Army get the term, "Army Dogs"? :)" It's the Marines Birthday :) But since you ask about the army, I spent about 3 months on an army base, one of about 30 marines (fleet marines, the rest were in training) and I came up with this joke, actually it's an inter-service insult deliver with the intention of jocularity.

I would ask the soldiers who would talk to me and compare themselves to me "OH! yeah, btw, whats the Marine Corps motto again?"

Naturally, they answered almost correctly, since everyone who ever read a book about war knows the answer "Semper Fi"

Then I would respond, "I don't know much about the army, but whats the motto of the army?"

There was ALWAYS! a pause, and I would cut in "OH! thats right the Army motto is "I was Gonna join the Marine Corps but...."

just a random aside. :)
