SACRAMENTO - Two days after suffering a stinging election defeat, a conciliatory Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger took responsibility for the failure of his initiatives and said he learned that he needs more patience in seeking government reform.
"The buck stops with me," he told reporters Thursday during a Capitol news conference, referring to the clean sweep against his proposals in Tuesday's special election. "I take full responsibility for this election. I take full responsibility for its failure."
Voters rejected each of the initiatives Schwarzenegger was pushing on the ballot. He sought to implement a state spending cap and give the governor authority to make midyear budget cuts, change the way legislative districts are drawn, lengthen the probationary period for teachers and restrict the ability of public employee unions to raise money for political campaigns.
Asked if there was anything he would do differently, Schwarzenegger said, "If I was to make another Terminator movie, I would tell Terminator to travel back in time to tell Arnold not to have another special election."
Voters also rejected unrelated measures on abortion, prescription drugs and California's energy market.
"I operate with a different mentality," Schwarzenegger said, saying he will seek to be more patient with legislators. "I think I recognize that now more so than I did before.
"The people said, 'Initiatives are fine, but you know, go and work it out with the legislators,'" he said. "It was the law of supply and demand: There was plenty of supply of initiatives, but not the demand."
Work it out w/the legistlators, but realize that the Unions and Dems own california by and large.
I did hear him say this..and at the very least, he did not try to spin this.....something most politicians would or could not bring themselves to do....
(Denny Crane: "I Don't Want To Socialize With A Pinko Liberal Democrat Commie.Say What You Like About Republicans. We Stick To Our Convictions. Even When We Know We're Dead Wrong.")
He or his operatives need to put the same initiatives on the board while the unions are broke. The bigger mistake would be to let them take a pass in 2006.
I applaud him for his act of humility.
While I do not agree with him on many of his actions since taking the oath, it does take a man to step up and speak as he has today.
If only the c'Rats were as willing to apologize for squandering the wealth of revenue that fell into the coffers of the state treasury as a result of the internet boom.
He knows how to work the press on a persoanl level, but really needed to do a better job fighting back against the union lies. The teachers union actually took out loans to fught these propositions. Hopefully, enough members realized that they don't have to pay each year & maybe a few thousand will "Opt Out" next year.
I agree.....I may not see eye to eye with him all the time but I actually do think he is doing what he thinks will help Calif as opposed to Gray Davis and his ilk.....
>> "I take full responsibility for this election. I take full responsibility for its failure."
And therein lies the difference between Republicans and the rat opposition.
If those who opposed these measures lost they would be calling the winners nitwits and working on another shot at the electorate; if they could not find a court to invalidate the referendum{s}.
As it stands, they won and no other poll ever need be taken.
At least the losing side has the pride to admit defeat with dignity. Give the people what they want.
This is why he's going to get reelected. He's a savvy pol. He and the statehouse knows that the key measures nearly won.
He's also right in that had the measures waited until 2006, they might have passed.
GOOD post, Norm.
THANK YOU!
Thanks!

Chin up Arnold, you'll live to fight another day.
If at first you don't succeed, try, try again.
LOL! You devil, you!
WTF does that have to do with anything?
I smell zot bait.
Your comments are totally uncalled for and inappropriate.

The good news is that the GOP will have empty coffers to run against in CA in 2006.
