At one time no one wanted to live west of the Mississippi, either, except the brave.
Living in highly populated areas is simply a choice. That choice does not mean we are overcrowded by any stretch of the imagination.
I agree on the part of illegals. They should be run out of the country. Not because we are overcrowded, but because they are here illegally and cost us a fortune.

We are overpopulated, period.

End ALL immigration.
End LEGAL immigration.
End illegal immigration.
We are stuffed to the gills with people.
If every American could own at least 70 square miles of unspoiled wilderness property, a good part of which being saltwater beach-front on the American East or West coast . . .
And in a climate not too hot, not too cold . . .
Then we would not be overpopulated.
We are way past that criteria.
And the more immigrants we add, the further away from that pleasant ideal we get.
