Deputy Wrecks Three Squad Cars, Must Attend Driving School

WORTHINGTON, Minn. (AP) - There was some grumbling, but the Nobles County Commissioners agreed to buy another squad car after a sheriff's deputy totaled three county squads in 18 months.

"How many squad cars do we give a deputy before we put him behind the desk?" asked Commissioner Marv Zylstra on Tuesday. "It's taxpayer dollars that are sending him out there to ruin another squad car."

The latest crash was Aug. 9, less than three weeks after the same deputy totaled another county squad car.

During the commissioner's meeting, Zylstra mentioned "The Andy Griffith Show," wondering how many times Deputy Barney Fife would shoot himself in the foot before his gun was taken away.

Sheriff Kent Wilkening said the deputy had to attend driving school and that other steps were taken. He reminded the commissioners that deputies often drive more than 250 miles in a night, often at high speeds with lights flashing.

"When you're doing that, that increases your risk for accidents," said Wilkening. He said the deputy would stay on patrol.

The new squad car will be used as a back-up for the department. It was projected to cost $10,500.

He'd probably wreck the desk too.

Why do you think they just gave Barney 1 bullet?

Maybe they should buy this guy a bicycle.

If the collisions were not caused by the deputy, he should not be punished. If they were, he should be disciplined, and if correction does not take, let him go.

If they did not avail the deputy of pursuit driving school, the county has NOTHING to complain about. Don't ask someone to drive fast to an emergency without training and evaluation.

I note that only the number of accidents he had was mentioned, not the circumstances. They should be available, easily, as it makes big news in a small town.

This guy sounds kinda like a school bus driver I once had the misfortune to ride with.
She was EXTREMELY nearsighted. Furthermmore, the only kind of checks she would do on the bus (the drivers in that district were supposed to do routine checks of various things to make sure they worked) were "random brake checks" if she thought someone was tailgating her. The combination of these factors explained why she was rear-ended several times, hit a school (I kid you not) while pulling into a parking lot, and had her battery die on her at one point while she was letting the kids off the bus, causing us all to be quite late getting home because another bus had to be sent out to rescue us. Did I mention that the above all happened in the one year I rode with her?
She's still driving a bus. Heaven help the kids.
