So... if Islam is indeed "a mortal threat" (and in my dictionary, a "mortal threat" portends a life-or-death struggle), what must Islam's ultimate fate be, if the West is to survive?

If our leaders could admit the answer to your question, we wouldn't be in any danger at all.
This would be an easy fight, if we were to actually fight.
In the short run, it needs to be contained and it's adherents pushed back to the margins - as was once done, starting in the 8th Century.
In the long run, it's adherents need to find another religion. Frankly, almost any other will do from a secular standpoint. But for their own best interests and the interests of the rest of mankind, that religion would be Christianity.
It's a difficult thing for a Muslim to convert from Islam - and purposely so. At the minimum, conversion from Islam is a cultural death sentence where one is separated forever from family and community. At the maximum it is a physical death sentence. It takes genuine individual courage and faith to do so. Frankly, this is a work which can only be done by the Holy spirit by a great revival within the House of Umma!
