Pistol-Packing Grandmother Shoots Intruder

ARLINGTON, Texas -- A woman found evidence on her porch that someone might have broken into her house when she let her dogs out for a walk early Wednesday morning. The woman's granddaughter also said she heard noises from inside the house.

Susan Gaylord Buxton, 66, retrieved her .38 caliber handgun and searched her house. She found a man hiding in a closet, covered by a coat.

The man, 22-year-old Christopher Lessner, lunged for the gun, and, police said, Buxton shot him once in the leg. She fired a second shot, which missed, according to police.

"She had let her dogs out to go to the bathroom and noticed there were muddy footprints leading into her house," said Doug Depoma, with the Arlington Police Department. The woman "searched her house and located him inside a closet near the front door."

Buxton, who was a license for the weapon, said she feared for her safety and that of her 28-year-old granddaughter.

"He was 6 feet tall," she said. "He could have done something horrible my granddaughter and me. That's exactly the reason you need to learn how to handle (a firearm) and keep it with you."

Arlington police attempted to pull over Lessner near Interstate 30 and Fielder Road in briefly after 11 p.m. Tuesday. Lessner drove the car to a dead-end road and fled into a nearby neighborhood.

Police began canvassing the neighborhood near the 1700 block of Northhaven Court on foot as well as by air.

At about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, officers responded to a 911 call of a shooting at a residence. The homeowner told police she found someone hiding in her house and shot him in the leg.

Lessner ran from the woman's house and was found at about 3 a.m. a few houses away hiding underneath a patio deck, police said.

He was arrested and transported to an area hospital, where he is being treated for a gunshot wound.

Buxton was not injured in the incident.

Arlington police said Lessner is expected to be charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, evading arrest, criminal mischief and criminal trespass. Buxton was not expected to face charges.

I've had this one since I finished the class in April. I plan on buying others...probably many others...before I'm done! :)

I appreciate all you did to help me make my decision!

Two to the chest and one to the head is what was drilled into me, since you bring up training.

That's what I've been taught too. I take the head shot first, because I want him to not be able to advance on me.

I don't know if I would stop at the 3 shots or empty my gun...I would probably empty it! I guess it depends on if he's still twitching.

Shoot, and here I thought the lady was just trying to see if he could do the Texas Two Step.

Judging by the comments made about the taped 911 call, she took the measure of the a**hat and dealt with it. The urine puddle might have been a clue that there he weren't so much.;>).

Could have been worse if a pot of lye had been handy. Women's charity just goes so far, least in my experience ;>)

Letting them go is new to me too.

The prosecution will be sure to remember that in your trial when you try to claim self-defense as you kept shooting after the threat was eliminated.

"I have mine...goes with me everywhere I go! .44 special with Gold Dot ammo!"

I just swtiched to the .357 Gold Dot ammo. Tried the JHP out on a pumpkin filled with water. Wow! what a mess! AND, the round went through a 1/4" plywood board and I was able to dig it up out of the ground (about 2"-3" deep). So the over penetration wasn't to bad.

".44 mag will do the job

Im suprised your lil ol self can handle that barkin pistol.

May I suggest a .45 for ease of reaquisition?"

You guys are nuts if you try to carry these concealed. My snub nosed .357 gets heavy in my pocket. I suspect a .44 or .45 would give a guy back problems.

Can we come to your house and watch? :o) We can put down plastic and everything. - Sarc.

Just so you know, everything you say and write can be held against you in a court of law. I would be less vocal about your intent and more vocal on the fear for your life. Just to protect you in court if your worst (assumedly) fears are realized.

"Barely notice any recoil. I practiced over and over, shooting my computer! Empty gun, point at computer monitor, slow squeeze, follow through...over and over till you no longer flinch!"

I hope you are kidding. That is scary.

In Texas I get to determine when the threat was eliminated.

If the goblin is mobile then the threat indeed has NOT been eliminated.

unauthorized use of a motor vehicle

It's a good thing he didn't steal it.

Good effort, but a .38 and a leg shot with two rounds expended?

Apparently the leg shot was deliberate, at least that's what her explanation on KLIF's Ankarlo show this AM sounded like. Ankarlo asked her why, since she'd had the CHL training, she didn't shoot him center of mass. Her explanation, "he was closer than the closest target of the CHL test, so I figured I could aim somewhere other than CoM", or words to that effect.

She should have called the police and let them go in to find him

Her granddaughter was in the house, was she supposed to abandon her there?

And before you say she should have abandoned the house, taking the granddaughter and the dogs with her, I'll just relate that she said she was Mad, that someone had invaded her home, not afraid. Many Texas Ladies have a different attitude about that sort of thing. She had a delightful rural Dallas area native accent, so I do think she's probably a native Texian.

Why does this inane narration even need to be provided?

In Texas, it shouldn't. But many news writers, can't really call them reporters, don't know the law. That's evidenced in this article by both that statement and the "permit for the weapon" statement. Since there is no such thing a permit for a weapon in Texas. You can own anything the feds will allow, including full auto machine guns, with no license or permit required. What you can't do is carry concealed without a permit. You also can't carry one openly at all, except in a limited set of circumstances, on your own property being one of them. You can however have a handgun concealed in your vehicle, as long as you are traveling, which is now defined legally as being in a vehicle, going somewhere, and not committing any crime, other than traffic violations, while you do it.

I started to wound a rabid dog once.

Changed my mind.

Decided to shoot center mass.

And San Franfreakshow, Ca. just voted for a ban on citizens to own firearms. Granny might not have fared as well living in that liberal fools' city.

Which, other than probably being born in Texas, is probably why she doesn't live there.

My people won't let me reload much less melt my own rounds

Which people? Even the Fat Guy has reloaded in the past. True only shotshells, but the principal is there, and I've still got the equipment, including a set of 12 gauge dies that I've never used, even though I've had them for 15+ years. :)

I wouldn't want to try to make my own shot though, that's a tricky business, compared to casting bullets.

Somebody was watering a yard?

Or the dogs got into the area where the A/C condensate drips out. In addition to dry, in the sense of lack of rain, it's been hot and moderately humid.

This is a pic of my daughter at 13 years old. Everything in the pic except for the AR15 with green furniture is full auto.

I remember that day. The only time I got to meet TC, in person that is.
