Pistol-Packing Grandmother Shoots Intruder
ARLINGTON, Texas -- A woman found evidence on her porch that someone might have broken into her house when she let her dogs out for a walk early Wednesday morning. The woman's granddaughter also said she heard noises from inside the house.
Susan Gaylord Buxton, 66, retrieved her .38 caliber handgun and searched her house. She found a man hiding in a closet, covered by a coat.
The man, 22-year-old Christopher Lessner, lunged for the gun, and, police said, Buxton shot him once in the leg. She fired a second shot, which missed, according to police.
"She had let her dogs out to go to the bathroom and noticed there were muddy footprints leading into her house," said Doug Depoma, with the Arlington Police Department. The woman "searched her house and located him inside a closet near the front door."
Buxton, who was a license for the weapon, said she feared for her safety and that of her 28-year-old granddaughter.
"He was 6 feet tall," she said. "He could have done something horrible my granddaughter and me. That's exactly the reason you need to learn how to handle (a firearm) and keep it with you."
Arlington police attempted to pull over Lessner near Interstate 30 and Fielder Road in briefly after 11 p.m. Tuesday. Lessner drove the car to a dead-end road and fled into a nearby neighborhood.
Police began canvassing the neighborhood near the 1700 block of Northhaven Court on foot as well as by air.
At about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, officers responded to a 911 call of a shooting at a residence. The homeowner told police she found someone hiding in her house and shot him in the leg.
Lessner ran from the woman's house and was found at about 3 a.m. a few houses away hiding underneath a patio deck, police said.
He was arrested and transported to an area hospital, where he is being treated for a gunshot wound.
Buxton was not injured in the incident.
Arlington police said Lessner is expected to be charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, evading arrest, criminal mischief and criminal trespass. Buxton was not expected to face charges.
Flyer's.
They weren't purple until they got in the wash with humblegunner's nightie.
"Good effort, but a .38 and a leg shot with two rounds expended? "
A couple of things could have transpired, neither of which the story tells.
1. The perp could have been sitting in the closet with his feet on the floor this making the target mostly legs. When he reached for the gun would have still be a sitting and the shot hit what is was most likely - legs.
2. An alternative scenario is that whether the perp was sitting or standing in closet. When he reached for her firearm, she pulled down to place weapon out of reach and thus the weapon was pointing toward his legs. While she might (might) have been too close to perp she maintained the weapon on target rather than turning weapon away from perp to the sides.
Still nicely done.
Heck my .44 revolver, single action has only a 1 and a half pound trigger pull and I love it. Doesn't take but a half a sec to cock it but it is great when target shooting, just get the sights lined up and pow, no pulling off target.
Eaker forgot his sqarcasm tag and was being way to modest ,I think.
In other words, she only got off a leg shot because riding a unicycle blindfolded while balancing a toaster on her nose threw off her balance.
Or she missed. She left the Goblin injured and very much if not more of a threat.
I am glad it worked out, but a little range time is still in order.
She missed the femoral artery. .38's are great for learning to shoot with, but step up a bit for your carry piece. At least use a hot load .38+P with a good hollowpoint bullet. This is your LIFE on the line here.
... shooting my computer! ...
Please give us all a minute's warning before you start firing!
Just checked and KXAS has the tape link,

I guess we have different training.
I'll ping a buddy or two familiar with firearm training and see what they say.
I guess the old school of aiming for center mass is no longer valid. Letting them go is new to me too. I guess I am getting old.
Look at how many cops expend all their rounds, and hit nothing.
Sounds more like a lack of training. If a center mass shot is available - take it. If not - shoot whats available. Two to the chest and one to the head is what was drilled into me, since you bring up training.
I'll go for the biggest chunk of the dude I can get the front sight on.
I see you finally decided on your pistol 8>)
Not only did she shoot him she cussed him out good and proper.Liked the 911 operator,"Did you just shoot him again?".
That is hillarious. I want her for a neighbor!
"Tell her to stop shooting him..." LOLOLOLOL
Center mass, for non-professionals.
It was the only target I could think of that would make me flinch...and I had to get over the flinching part!
:)
