Pistol-Packing Grandmother Shoots Intruder

ARLINGTON, Texas -- A woman found evidence on her porch that someone might have broken into her house when she let her dogs out for a walk early Wednesday morning. The woman's granddaughter also said she heard noises from inside the house.

Susan Gaylord Buxton, 66, retrieved her .38 caliber handgun and searched her house. She found a man hiding in a closet, covered by a coat.

The man, 22-year-old Christopher Lessner, lunged for the gun, and, police said, Buxton shot him once in the leg. She fired a second shot, which missed, according to police.

"She had let her dogs out to go to the bathroom and noticed there were muddy footprints leading into her house," said Doug Depoma, with the Arlington Police Department. The woman "searched her house and located him inside a closet near the front door."

Buxton, who was a license for the weapon, said she feared for her safety and that of her 28-year-old granddaughter.

"He was 6 feet tall," she said. "He could have done something horrible my granddaughter and me. That's exactly the reason you need to learn how to handle (a firearm) and keep it with you."

Arlington police attempted to pull over Lessner near Interstate 30 and Fielder Road in briefly after 11 p.m. Tuesday. Lessner drove the car to a dead-end road and fled into a nearby neighborhood.

Police began canvassing the neighborhood near the 1700 block of Northhaven Court on foot as well as by air.

At about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, officers responded to a 911 call of a shooting at a residence. The homeowner told police she found someone hiding in her house and shot him in the leg.

Lessner ran from the woman's house and was found at about 3 a.m. a few houses away hiding underneath a patio deck, police said.

He was arrested and transported to an area hospital, where he is being treated for a gunshot wound.

Buxton was not injured in the incident.

Arlington police said Lessner is expected to be charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, evading arrest, criminal mischief and criminal trespass. Buxton was not expected to face charges.

I have been in training...firing under pressure so I can train my brain to react without hesitation. If this guy shows up, he is planning on killing me...I have to be ready to drop him first.

I also don't put my finger on the trigger unless I am ready to fire. It rests on the side of the gun until time to fire. My training as been extensive, and I feel "almost" ready. Good thing too...he goes before the board of Pardons and Paroles on Dec 23rd.

A .44 huh?

Good for you, does the recoil bother you much?

Here is to a good aim and a steady picture.

A negligent discharge wont be a problem for the bad guy but could be trouble for those down range.

stay alert and stay safe

Good effort, but a .38 and a leg shot with two rounds expended?

Sounds like our Texas legislature needs to pass a Mandatory Firearms Training and Competency Act. In this one, we've got a 18-y.o. that fires 5 pump shotgun rounds from seven feet and scores no hits. I'm not sure that's actually possible, but that's what is reported.

Granny wins.

Barely notice any recoil. I practiced over and over, shooting my computer! Empty gun, point at computer monitor, slow squeeze, follow through...over and over till you no longer flinch!

Now when I fire, I fall right back into position for the next round!

My 10 year old daughter is going into the Junior NRA this winter...she wants to compete, and has already started cutting out the sugar and caffeine in her diet so she will have a steady hand!

My son will start Junior NRA when he is old enough too.

Great idea. The mental and physical discipline involved in learning to shoot safely and effectively will benefit them in other endeavors as well.

And I'm sure there'll be one or two mentions of the 2nd Amendment, its meaning and importance from their FReeper mom as well. ;-)

A definite sign of good training. If you get the chance, watch the scene in the Mel Gibson movie Payback where his drugged up wife (played by Deborah Unger) shoots him. She is sitting in the car afterward when the creep comes up to her. She is waving the gun around and seems to be zonked out but she has her finger parked just as you say, on the side of the gun. She is playing a skanked out witch but can't avoid good safety habits :) I'll bet she was well trained and probably has more than a few hours at the range.

Muddy footprint????It hasn't rained in Texas since the Hurricane came through, and I think it missed Arlington. But, anyway, the little lady did a great thing.

I respect the hell out of people who know more about guns than I do here on FR and that is most folks!

Step one: Join the NRA and subscribe to American Rifleman.

Step two: Go shooting with someone who has been around firearms most of his life

Step three: Fire wheel guns and pistols. Make a decision on which weapon is most comfortable for you.

Step four: Purchase a weapon.

Step five: Go to the range and PRACTICE... PRACTICE... PRACTICE!

Step six: Get a CCW permit.

Step seven: go to the range and PRACTICE... PRACTICE... PRACTICE!

Ammo is very inexpensive. 9mm, .38 special, .45 ACP is "Cheaper Than Dirt."

I will try to find that movie and watch for that scene. :)
I am very careful with my gun...I would never want to hurt an innocent, but I have to be ready to drop this one guy when he comes for me. I pray he isn't released, but he is a five time felon, and they just keep letting him go :(

He told me I would die when he got out...and he told me he wouldn't leave a witness the next time. So I not only have to avoid being his victim again, I have to consider the safety of his next victim. I won't have that on my hands...he's going home in a pine box!
