Pistol-Packing Grandmother Shoots Intruder

ARLINGTON, Texas -- A woman found evidence on her porch that someone might have broken into her house when she let her dogs out for a walk early Wednesday morning. The woman's granddaughter also said she heard noises from inside the house.

Susan Gaylord Buxton, 66, retrieved her .38 caliber handgun and searched her house. She found a man hiding in a closet, covered by a coat.

The man, 22-year-old Christopher Lessner, lunged for the gun, and, police said, Buxton shot him once in the leg. She fired a second shot, which missed, according to police.

"She had let her dogs out to go to the bathroom and noticed there were muddy footprints leading into her house," said Doug Depoma, with the Arlington Police Department. The woman "searched her house and located him inside a closet near the front door."

Buxton, who was a license for the weapon, said she feared for her safety and that of her 28-year-old granddaughter.

"He was 6 feet tall," she said. "He could have done something horrible my granddaughter and me. That's exactly the reason you need to learn how to handle (a firearm) and keep it with you."

Arlington police attempted to pull over Lessner near Interstate 30 and Fielder Road in briefly after 11 p.m. Tuesday. Lessner drove the car to a dead-end road and fled into a nearby neighborhood.

Police began canvassing the neighborhood near the 1700 block of Northhaven Court on foot as well as by air.

At about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, officers responded to a 911 call of a shooting at a residence. The homeowner told police she found someone hiding in her house and shot him in the leg.

Lessner ran from the woman's house and was found at about 3 a.m. a few houses away hiding underneath a patio deck, police said.

He was arrested and transported to an area hospital, where he is being treated for a gunshot wound.

Buxton was not injured in the incident.

Arlington police said Lessner is expected to be charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, evading arrest, criminal mischief and criminal trespass. Buxton was not expected to face charges.

When it comes to guns and shooting, these folks are pikers compared to the Eakers. :)

Apparently the leg shot was deliberate, at least that's what her explanation on KLIF's Ankarlo show this AM sounded like. Ankarlo asked her why, since she'd had the CHL training, she didn't shoot him center of mass. Her explanation, "he was closer than the closest target of the CHL test, so I figured I could aim somewhere other than CoM", or words to that effect.

She was a bit more succinct on WFAA. On it she said: "I shot him in the leg 'cause I was aiming for his leg."

I gave him a proper scolding for getting sick and messing up our shoots.

He is the heart and soul of the HAT shooters.

You have heard the term, "mighty big shoes to fill".

Well these boots are too big for anyone to fill.

Ain't gonna happen. We will have more shoots and every single one will be dedicated to El Roy. I have had thoughts along these lines.

It ain't the same to get hammered on gin & tonics without Brother Dix either.

El Gato, my FRiend, TC did stand out didn't he?

Oh, since it is just the two of us, TC's son-in-laws' daughter was ticked when TC showed up at her wedding wearing his his Texas finest regalia. I didn't understand until I realized that everybody remembered TC, but didn't remember what color dress she wore.

No - I hadn't... I hate to be critical, but aimin' for the leg on an intruder is not ideal. Glad it worked for her and may the criminals all be warned!

If the goblin is mobile then the threat indeed has NOT been eliminated.

And that seems to be the case here. He probably figured she might shoot him again, so he ran for it, so she did, but missed. I know the second shot came well after the first one which put him on the floor. Easy to miss a moving target, even at close range, especially when you didn't really expect it to move. In any event, I'll bet that second shot added 5 mph to his hobbling speed.

Decided to shoot center mass.

Sounds like a Good Choice!

Remember that the man was moving when she shot him, towards her. I suspect she was aiming at the spot where his legs come together. That was one angry grandma.

Did? He still does in my book. And he always will, long after all of us are gone.

Did? He still does in my book.

Lord knows I meant that day is why it was in past tense.

I am so lucky to be his friend. The man held me in somewhat high regard.

Nobody can figure out why.

Squantos,

We are trashing yer buddy TC over here!

When your family does room clearing exercises you do it with loaded weapons and live ammo?

Do you do the same when practicing a quick draw drill?

Okay, now THAT is scary.

trussell, you are welcome at my range any time.

Still got the .44 Special Bulldog I see. Good for you. Any perp on the wrong end of it will be lookin' into a big hole that ends in eternity.

Get some Safariland speedloaders. They lock the ammo into the loader and won't come apart in your purse or pocket.

.38's are great for learning to shoot with, but step up a bit for your carry piece. At least use a hot load .38+P with a good hollowpoint bullet. This is your LIFE on the line here.

Nightstand weapon is a Sig P226 in 9. Carry is a .380 with CorBons.
