EX-CBS producer Mary Mapes, fired over a controversial "60 Minutes II" story on President Bush's National Guard service, says she still believes the report was "true" and accurate.
"No one has proved that the documents were not authentic," Mapes says on this morning's "Good Morning America."
Mapes is breaking her silence to promote her new book, "Truth and Duty: The Press, the President, and the Privilege of Power."

She says she "did not have it in for George Bush" and says she doesn't feel responsible for what happened to her colleagues in the scandal's aftermath.

What Mapes doesn't dispute is the fact that she called a member of John Kerry's presidential campaign before the "60 Minutes II" report aired.
"I wish to God I hadn't done it, because I think it was so widly misinterpreted," she says - adding that she only made the call to curry favor with the source who gave her the disputed documents.
"I don't think that I committed bad journalism. I really don't," she says.
Mapes says she's continuing to investigate the source of the documents.

It was her responsibility to verify authenticity of the documents before using them. It was not the responsibility of the public to prove them false. Fortunately they did after Little Ms Mary let her arrogance override professional ethics.
LOL!!
Thing is, she speaks for probably 90+ percent of "journalists" today. The media's giving her the full star treatment, writing glowing articles about her and her book and letting her come onto their shows and spout her drivel with only an occasional softball tossed in to allow her to catch her breath.
As far as they're concerned, Mapes' only "crime" was to speak "truth to power." The media honestly believes that she was a victim of a Karl Rove-orchestrated smear campaign using crazy right-wing bloggers to cover his evil tracks. These mouth-breathing Christian goons used their Gestapo-like tactics to bully the networks into hiding the truth about how George Bush avoided his service in the TANG, all the while pushing the lying Swiftees in a despicable attempt to paint the greatest war hero our nation has ever produced into the fraud that Bushitler really was. That's their view of the whole episode in a nutshell.
And whether or not the documents were real or not is immaterial to them. Even if they were forgeries the story they told is true because they (the media) said it was. And since "no one has conclusively proved the documents were fakes", it doesn't matter any way because us Nazis can't prove they're fakes, and it's up to us to verify their authenticity. So Nyah, nyah, nyah!
I give it just a matter of weeks before she's hired on by some other network at a substantially increased pay rate. The book tour is as much about "rehabilitating" her as it is about selling books.
Assume the above to be true, which it clearly is not...
Maybe someone should break it to Mary that it was her job to prove the documents were authentic...
The second, but even more worrisome thing is the ease with which she is apparently getting quality air time without much skepticism. It is an easy truism to say that if this had been an attack on Bill Clinton after his reelection in 1996, how much air time would such an author get from the MSM? The irony is that there were multiple books doing just that at that time and their presence in the MSM was barely a flicker. What is sauce for the goose ... but how can these show bookers and reporters look at this and say only trivialities?
The beam in their eye that they conveniently ignore is that Mary Mapes was a colleague in the incestuous world view that is fortress BlueMedia. She will attract an audience even of our persuasion who must listen to believe that such dogmatism is so resistant to reason and logic. Then when we wait to hear if the show talent has any response to such lapses, we are forcibly reminded that they probably feel only sympathy and fellowship for someone whose misfortune could so easily be their own.
So will continue her tour and once again the perception of the media-lead sheeple will remember this heroine and martyr of the VAST RIGHT WING! Arrgggggghhhhhhh!

60 MINUTES. BUSTED.
The claim that the documents have not been proven as forgeries is yet another lie by Mapes.
They were definitively and irrebutably proven forgeries by Joseph Newcomer, http://www.flounder.com, and by Peter Tytell, the expert hired by the Thornburgh-Baccardi Investigative Panel. That was just based on typography.
Her claimed refuge in the content of the documents "meshing" with the known facts was eviscerated in full by the Thornburgh-Baccardi Report. Wikipedia's entry on the Killian documents is also very thorough on this point.
The Thornburgh-Baccardi Report documented literally hundreds of lies by Mapes, though they don't call them lies outright. They are contradictions laid out in the report between Mapes' endlessly self-serving story, and contemporaneous notes, e-mails, documents and recollections of everyone she talked to. She lied at virtually every turn to sell the story at CBS, in the package itself, and in defending it afterword.
Now she is recycling all those lies and telling a new bushel to boot.
Captain Ahab is laid back by comparison.
The Brian Ross piece on Good Morning America was brutal for Mapes, because he got her to say that in her world journalistic standards did not require that she establish authenticity.
She is making a bigger fool of herself every time she opens her mouth.

> ... documents were not authentic, unless they were
> typed on a very expensive machine the Texas Air
> National guard never had ...
Attempts at replicating that failed. Even had they
matched the typeface, there were serious problems
with the content, terminology and chronology. Occam's
Razor says : 100% likelihood of inept 21st century
Word.doc fakes.
But people are missing the real news here. It's not
often that a Legacy Media type openly, explicitly
describes the principles that fuel their corruption.
Mapes has admitted not only a logical proof inversion,
but also her motivation: she enjoyed "making a difference"
(i.e. using her journalist position to support her
social advocacies).
Thanks Mary. No one can now pretend the episode was an
innocent error.
...and no one has proved that she is not a liar and a communist.
A solemn bow to the master....
What was her "standard of journalism" quote?
The proof is about as exhaustive as you can get, sheesh.
"No one has proved that the documents were not authentic"
No one has proved that John Kerry is not attracted to little boys.
Mary Mapes should get Sandy Berger to go and dig the proof up and stuff it in his undershorts and socks....
Ahhh, but that's not quite correct. When she was a reporter in Seattle years ago, she was exposed for interviewing a supposed witness to a shooting, who actually had drunkenly staggered upon the scene after police and teevee cameras had arrived. John Carlson, of talk radio station KVI used to work with her at that time, and he has told the story of how she used this fool's statement either without any checking or with the knowldedge that he wasn't an "eye witness".
This was back in her early days at KIRO-TV in Seattle. So she has a long history of making thing up or not checking her story/facts and getting it wrong.
How many more of her "stories" have been based on unsubstantiated facts or documents, just to "get the story"?
But it's clear that she has no concept of ethics or the truth, nor morals probably. And it's not a recent affliction.
Mapes believes that Rove masterminded the public attack on the CBS guard story.

Fired producer finds there's life after CBS
By ANTHONY VIOLANTI

EXCERPT
This year the media has changed as has the image of the Bush administration and its dealings with the press.
I. Lewis "Scooter' Libby Jr., a vice presidential adviser, has been indicted in the leak of CIA agent Valerie Plame's name to reporters. Karl Rove, Bush's closest adviser, remains under investigation for his role in that case.
Mapes believes that Rove masterminded the public attack on the CBS guard story. It came out in September 2004, during the heat of a presidential election campaign.
"This administration has a terrible pattern of attempting to discredit and destroy people who have the temerity to raise an issue or criticize a policy," Mapes said in a telephone interview.
"I think we're going through a watershed event in this country in terms of understanding the media and our need for the media," she added. "We're seeing what the last five years of unquestioning coverage has gotten us."
It was as authentic as Fraudulant 911 was factual! Her best line was when drilled about her proving the documents authenticity rather than everyone proving their false she said,"I don't think that should be the Standard for journalism." Anotherwords, there are NO Standards! Amazing!
