Patent issued for anti-gravity device

WASHINGTON, Nov. 9 (UPI) -- The U.S. patent office has reportedly granted a patent for an anti-gravity device -- breaking its rule to reject inventions that defy the laws of physics.

The journal Nature said patent 6,960,975 was granted Nov. 1 to Boris Volfson of Huntington, Ind., for a space vehicle propelled by a superconducting shield that alters the curvature of space-time outside the craft in a way that counteracts gravity.

One of the main theoretical arguments against anti-gravity is that it implies the availability of unlimited energy.

"If you design an anti-gravity machine, you've got a perpetual-motion machine," Robert Park of the American Physical Society told Nature.

Park said the action shows patent examiners are being duped by false science.

It will be an historic and monumental day.

Thoughout history there have many "eureka" days. Add to that...many devout Christians believe that He walked on water. That is a belief in levitation. Peter levitated also.

Nothing is impossible that can be imagined. The history of science tells us that. Of course, the jury is still out on time travel and a few other things. But what does the jury know.

I can't remember the source but I do remember that some authoritative group of scientists said at the end of the 19th century that science had discovered all there was to discover. And someone else said that a heavier than air machine could never fly (I guess he wasn't a bird watcher).

Only if it's a perpetual anti-gravity machine. Something that counters the effects of gravity does not by definition require unlimited energy. That should be obvious.
:')

In any case, I'd waaaay prefer having one of those food replicators in my house.

"If you could block the effect of gravity, you could use it to lift a large weight with a small amount of energy"

Soooo, if the blocking of gravity didn't require a small amount, but a large enough amount to conform to the laws of thermodynamics?

When they can 'ignore/neutralize/abandon or insulate from' gravitational energy determined by mass, without using a proportional force to negate that same gravitational pull, THEN they're on to something!

Casper the friendly ghost can do it! :-)

No, I think "flung" is a better description. You were right to remember that the Earth and Sun are moving, but don't forget that the Earth is also spinning. We're sitting on the outside edge of a rotating ball, and the only thing holding us in place is gravity. Take away gravity and the rotational inertia we all carry will transform instantly into straight line momentum...to any observer, it would appear that we were "flung" straight up into the sky. More precisely, you'll be flung up at an angle opposite your line of latitude...if you're on the equator at 0 degrees you'll shoot straight up, if you're at the North Pole at 90 degrees you'll shoot along the ground straight off into the horizon.

"Flung" is quite appropriate methinks :)

That's no more 'anti-gravity' than an object hanging from a rope is. With magnetic suspension the actual weight of the object doesn't change and it's still being carried by whatever is holding the magnet. The only thing magnetic suspension does is change the carrying method from a visible support to an invisible field.

Ooh...weaponized antigrav guns...I like that thought!! If Iran screws with us, we'll just flip of their gravity and laugh while their whole country is flung into space. Too cool!

On a more serious note, of course a private citizen should own the patent. There are already laws that allow the government to circumvent patents for national security reasons, so owning a patent on an antigrav generator would be no different than owning a patent on any other kind of technology. Many of the components in our weapons and aircraft are patented by non government agencies, and this would be no different.

Mass exerts an invisible, if real field in its vicinity. The effect in relation to the mass depends uopn the shape of the mass. Think of when they landed that probe on the astroid. It was peanut shaped. They had to calculate the gravitational pull on the spacecraft according to where it was in relation to the body of this oblong asteroid.

Accepting that gravity is proportional to vicinity of mass, then one could see how a minor minipulation of space/time could result in an acceleration. The 2nd law of thermodynamics could reasonably be circumvented. I can't write the equations. But, there are many out there smarter than me. Would you rule it out on spec?!

Regards

Mike

I believe the theory is that gravity bleeds across dimensional lines so we're only seeing the narrow slice that appears within our own dimension. If this is true, there should also be random gravity wells peppering our own universe where galaxies, stars, and planets in other dimensions have masses too. It'll be an interesting development if we ever figure out a way to "see" gravity wells and confirm this.

Of course, if that theory is correct we may never be able to build antigrav equipment. Doing so would require us to widen or thin the separation between the dimensions, which could destroy the universe (or make a big hole in it where our planet is) if an accident occurred.

Dang! I hate it when that happens.

You know, I have one simple request. And that is to have sharks with frickin' laser beams attached to their heads! Now evidently my cycloptic colleague informs me that that cannot be done. Ah, would you remind me what I pay you people for, honestly? Throw me a bone here!

I sincerely hope they never invent that... or there won't be an unspoiled acre anywhere on this planet.
