I remember reading about this as a kid. I was wondering what happened to it. I'll bet a real excavation effort by professionals (read Americans) could pull the "treasure" out of that hole.

Actually I recall the last effort was pretty high tech by yanks with deep pockets. All to no avail. It's a money pit and my feeling is more money has been lost than the treasure is likely worth.

Unfortunately, over the years the various amateur and
semi-pro efforts, some fatal, may have sufficiently
screwed up the geology and hydrology as to make that
impractical.
There's also the possibility that the structures were
built in anticipation of later treasure, and are void
of significant treasure. "You lot stay behind and
dig the chamber. We'll be back with the loot soon."

I heard someone thinking that with the new cryogenic work being done they could freeze a waterproof line around the place and dig it up without fear of the water rushing in. Be kind of fun if they ever actually find something there.

There are a number of books on this island and the efforts that have been made to find what ever was down there (if anything).
There have been multiple professional and nonprofessional efforts to excavate the site. None have been successful. In fact there have been so many efforts that the site of the original hole has been lost. FDR was an investor in one of the efforts.
Woods Hole did an exploration for the current owner but they have never released any of their findings or photos and the owner isn't talking.
Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child did a great fictional treatment of this in their book Riptide. I always enjoy their books and have read almost everyone of them. I think I'm missing one or two of the nonfiction books.
