Azahari 'dead after police raid' (Bali bombing terrorist mastermind blowed up real good)

Indonesia's most wanted man and the terrorist blamed for a string of attacks including the Bali bombings has reportedly blown himself up after police raided his East Java hideout this afternoon.

Malaysian bomb mastermind Dr Azahari Husin apparently triggered a bomb killing himself and two accomplices after police surrounded a villa in the hill resort town of Batu, near Malang, local television news stations reported.

Witnesses told of gunshots and at least two explosions after crack anti-terror police raided the house around 3.30pm this afternoon.

The area was this evening cordoned off and electricity had been shut down.

A Detachment 88 source told AAP on condition of anonymity that the raid was linked to the October 1 triple suicide bombing on three cafes in Kuta and Jimbaran, which killed 20 innocent people, among them four Australians.

``It has a link,'' he said.

The ANTV television station, citing police sources, said Husin had been hiding out in the house and blew himself up rather than be captured.

Husin is said to be the brains behind a string of terror bombings, including the recent Bali bombings, last year's Australian Embassy attack and the 2003 suicide car bombing of the JW Marriott Hotel in Jakarta.

Along with suicide bomb recruiter and fellow Malaysian Noordin Top, he is Indonesia's most wanted man.

Local residents described the situation as ``tense'' as police surrounded the housing complex.
