Sanders takes big lead in early returns [San Diego Mayor]

SAN DIEGO – Former San Diego Police Chief Jerry Sanders jumped to an early lead Tuesday night in his bid to be the city's next mayor as he received 57 percent of the vote to Donna Frye's 43 percent with about 30 percent of precincts counted.

Absentee-ballot results were released by the Registrar of Voters shortly after the polls closed at 8 p.m., with Sanders winning 59 percent of those ballots.

Sanders arrived at Golden Hall shortly after 9 p.m., where he told reporters he was confident.

"I think San Diegans had a clear choice in this election," he said. "So far, early, it looks like they are making that choice."

I wish people would insert some kind of indication of party affiliation for those of us that don't happen to live in the city being mentioned in the posts.

The USA is a VERY big place, and San Deigo may be the most important place to the person posting the story but its far from next door to me.

Donna Frye, a surf-shop owner and Democrat who has often been on the losing side of lopsided City Council votes, was staging an uphill battle against Republican Jerry Sanders, a mild-mannered Republican who enjoys strong backing from the city's business establishment.

Donna's married to Skip Frye, a "surfing legend."

Acting mayor Atkins is our current lesbian on the city council.

Donna looks awful because of too much sun and too much booze (she's dried out now).

San Diego City has more Democrat registered voters than Republicans now. It's about 1/3 each of independent, dem and gop. The County is more heavily Republican.

Sanders is NOT a conservative. One of his supporters was architect of the pension mess: ex-city manager Jack McGrory

Sanders will act as a tool of local corporate interests. Not a bad thing given our financial mess, but he's not a person of conservative convictions. He has said he'll know by May 2006 if San Diego will be taken into bankruptcy.

Sanders was a "hold your nose and vote" candidate.

How long till Sanders does a Clinton and says, "I had no idea how bad the budget is" and raises taxes?

My bet is 45 days.

I didn't vote for either Donna or Jerry.
