Chalabi to visit U.S. ahead of Iraqi elections

WASHINGTON, Nov 7 (Reuters) - The Iraqi politician most associated with the discredited prewar intelligence that has the Bush presidency in turmoil visits Washington this week as he maneuvers for advantage before Iraq's Dec. 15 elections.

Ahmad Chalabi, Iraq's deputy prime minister, is a former U.S. golden boy who for years was on the Pentagon payroll.

He fell from favor after the United States ousted Saddam Hussein but has proven a remarkable political survivor and is considered a likely candidate for prime minister.

Chalabi's visit will almost certainly provoke more debate over President George W. Bush's conduct of the war, which has contributed to a deep dive in his public approval ratings.

His ties to Iran -- and allegations that he may have passed U.S. secrets to Tehran -- helped estrange him from the Pentagon and other U.S. supporters. He denied the charges.

Chalabi visited Tehran at the weekend and met Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and other senior officials to discuss the Iraqi elections .

Chalabi said last week of the visit to the United States that it showed there was no "wall of ice" between him and the Bush administration ...

Um, correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't this guy's smashed image appear on the cover of Time after he was accused by the U.S. of passing secrets to Iran? Should we be receiving him as an honored diplomat?

The Iranian angle could be disinformation. Not that the guy is trustworthy anyway...
