(WANE-TV, Washington, D.C.) Indiana Congressman Mike Pence says some conservative leaders have talked with him about possibly running for president in 2008. Though he hasn't ruled it out, Pence downplays the possibility.
Pence is an increasingly visible figure on Capitol Hill. He now chairs Congress's largest caucus, the Republican Study Committee, a group of more than 100 conservative members of Congress. He has received national attention for his efforts to offset hurricane relief spending with budget cuts elsewhere and has opposed some of the Bush administration's changes in education and medicare policy.
In an interview broadcast on WANE-TV's 6 p.m. newscast Monday, Pence was asked if anyone in G.O.P. leadership had approached him about running for president. He responded, "We've certainly been approached by people who represent significant constituencies in the Republican party. When you chair the House conservative caucus, there's a broad array of very credible, well-established conservative organizations that dot the landscape of Washington D.C. and the country. Some people in that community have talked to us about maybe being a part of national leadership someday." Pence did not say specifically which groups have suggested he consider a presidential run but responded affirmatively when asked if the social policy organization, Family Research Council, would be representative of the types of groups that have approached him. "People associated with those types of groups have talked with us about those types of things," Pence said.
Pence said he has not ruled out a presidential run but also downplayed the possibility. He is not actively exploring a presidential bid now and has not been approached in any sort of official way by party leaders. Pence added, "Probably one Hoosier running for president in 2008 is enough", coyly referring to Democrat Senator Evan Bayh. Pence represents Indiana's sixth district, which covers parts of 19 counties in the eastern part of the state. Those include Adams, Wells, Blackford, and Jay counties and part of Allen County in northeast Indiana.
Hell no it ain't! Give Hoosiers a choice Pence! Don't let IN go blue!! NO!!!!
Mike Pence is the ONLY candidate who can get libertarian leaning conservatives and the Religious right EXCITED in 2008.Everyone in the conservative movement knows this.Mike Pence can unite all factions of this party all the while appealing to moderate swing voters. Now is the time to restart the Reagan Revolution!
Though he hasn't ruled it out, Pence downplays the possibility.
The only draw back of him running is the possibility of losing him in the Congress.
Congressmen lose Presidential elections. Voters instinctively go for those who have held administrative office.

That possibility would be worth the risk of losing him in Congress.
That is why we the people, have to lay as much of the groundwork as possible,Allowing Pence to stay in Congress as long as possible.
Pence is a nobody except to those who actually follow politics and the people of his district. Congressmen just do not have much of a chance of winning Presidential nominations. If he wants to be President, he should go run for governor of his state for a couple of terms then run for President.
He'd win a governors run in Indiana NO DOUBT. He should have ran last year.
Historically, voters do not pick Conservative Presidents(two,Reagan,Coolidge) Historically,Spending is NEVER cut and we are historically doomed to the Road to Serfdom.I do not want to be a slave to History.People will vote for the guy they like best and who they feel can do the job!
When's the last time a House of Reps member was elected President?
I'd have to agree, actually.
Reagan was unique in that he was socially conservative enough to appeal to Christian Right voters. However, his delivery on the issues and the way he presented them was such that it didn't p'o the libertarian and fiscal conservatives who might have been socially more moderate. Pence can do that too, IMHO.
Garfield
Historically, the GOP bigwigs don't give enough support to conservative Presidential candidates. If they could take center stage they'd have more of a shot.
That's a long time.
True, but so many republicans are socialists.. else why would they elect so many RINOs..
The boy hasn't a chance.. but I'm on his train anyway..
I've been Bushed out for 5 years.. been hopeing he would prove he was not a democrat, to me, you know, like his daddy is.. but he failed miserably..
Then we're due!
Pence is THE man... the kind of leader this country needs badly.
Saw him on an interview this weekend. Sounded good. Former news anchor, right?
