CA: Migden quits chair of key Senate committee

Sacramento -- State Sen. Carole Migden, who came under criticism earlier this year for pushing the voting button of a fellow lawmaker to help passage of one of her bills, abruptly relinquished her position as chair of the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee on Monday.

The San Francisco Democrat said she wanted to devote more of her time to help Controller Steve Westly in his bid for governor. But sources in the Senate who insisted on anonymity said Migden, who is known for having an abrasive style, angered many of her colleagues in the past year and that the final straw came at the end of session when Migden cast a vote for a Republican assemblyman who was away from his desk.

Migden said stepping down from the post was her decision, saying she now believes Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger can be defeated next year.

"I'm just want to devote everything I have to beating him," she said. "I still want to be connected to Senate leadership but with less responsibility."

The Appropriations Committee is one of the most powerful in the Legislature because any bill that contains funding must pass through it. The chair plays a significant role in deciding what bills make it through and which do not.

Migden's replacement, along with other committee changes, will be announced later in the week, according to the office of Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata, D-Oakland.

"Carole is a talented force in any operation, and her increased efforts on behalf of Steve Westly can only be seen as a boon for that organization," Perata said in a prepared statement.

Westly will face Treasurer Phil Angelides in the Democratic gubernatorial primary.

Was unfortunate enough to have to listen to her last week when I was working at a "granduation" ceremony from a local rehab center. It is a good center with a great reputation, and her entire speech, which should have been honoring their hard work, consisted of going off on Arnold and his Propositions and advising everyone to work hard to defeat them.

She's a real piece of work!!

Attn all Californians....get out and vote!!

I guess the old "spend more time with my family" canard doesn't really cut it if you're a Frisco Moonbat.

I'm embarrassed to admit it but she is my state senator. God help me.

First off, please take note of the grammatical "skew": when Migden cast a vote for a Republican assemblyman. The words afterwards only compound the initial "wrongness" of the reportage. What took place, actually? Carol Migden IDENTITY THEFTED the identity of a REPUBLICAN who was away at the moment. She pretended to be HE in order to cast an additional vote on a specific bill she was for or against. IS there data on WHAT THE ISSUE WAS THAT SHE SO-IDENTITY-THEFTED FOR OR AGAINST?

And then there is this:

Migden, who is known for having an abrasive style, angered many of her colleagues in the past year .

Witness the clash collision between Dems attempting to hold the party to more of a moderate position, and then, the far left -- as Migden is far left. As far as her support Westly? She knows he hasn't a chance. She is angling her newer position to promote her own position of "power, nuance, and influence" in CA politics. It sure ain't about Westly.

I'll wager Angelides won't let her ANYWHERE near his own campaign. She'll sink Westly and redirect Westly's "support" at the "appropriate" moment. IMHO, of course.

I forget what the issue was, but I think it was Guy Huston whose vote she tried to steal. She was caught though. He was in the room, but away from his desk when she did it.

AAAIIIEEEEE!! MY EYES!!

Judas Priest, man! This isn't like a Coulter thread; no pic is required. In fact, she along with Helen Thomas and a few others need their very own "NO PICTURES" mandate. Maybe we can all just agree to post the world's ugliest dog in lieu of them.

Thank you. Here's the article I'm looking for:

Ghost Vote Spooks the Assembly

snip:

Nobody was surprised that state Sen. Carole Migden voted in favor of her own cosmetics bill. The problem was that she did it in the wrong legislative house. Toward the end of Wednesday's floor session, Migden, a San Francisco Democrat, pushed the voting button of a GOP assemblyman who was temporarily away from his desk.

end snip

COSMETICS? That's a VERY SLIPPERY WORD in California. Cosmetic Surgery? Anti-something-in-someone's cosmetic products? I have no idea what the bill was about. Do you?
