The French government has announced that local authorities can order curfews in a bid to halt the rioting which has spread across the country in the past 12 days.

The government has also said that no warrants will be needed for police raids.

The new laws will come into force from 11pm local time (10pm Irish Time).

It is the first time France has exercised the curfew laws.

And if this doesn't work you're all going to be grounded for a month.

After two weeks of riots, wow. I assume a mayor in the U.S. doesn't have to go throught the Feds to call curfew.

Oh, no!!! A couple days ago Chirac was threatening them with warnings and today it's 11 pm curfews. Yep, that'll stop them.

Yeah, I guess it is "football" season and all the stadiums are busy. Otherwise, they should by now be filled with arrested rioters.

After two weeks of rioting any decent US mayor would have already requested the governor to call out the Guard and put out a call for armed volunteers.

I don't know. But they sure are not enforcing them if they do.

Wow! This is getting series. If those rioters stay out past the curfew time, they'll be in violation of the law.

Seems like curfew would only be effective as part of an offensive strategy using the military. That way, anyone out after curfew could be considered a target for arrest.

As France is currently in a defensive posture with an underarmed, understaffed and undertrained police force, curfew will do nothing to halt the violence.

Seems like they are leaving up to each local police station to handle their area with no coordination. I remember that happened during the Rodney King riots and the future L.A. police chief just ordered all his officers back into the barracks and locked the doors.

This fiasco reminds me of parents who tell their children, "If you do that one more time, you're going to get a spanking" yet, they continue saying that 10 more times.....and, in the end, perhpas the child only gets scolded but never spanked.

The results, to be expected: ill-mannered and wild children; that a different result would be expected is absolutely ludicrous and moronic.

And the french will achieve worse results if they continue with their empty threats, as well.

It's gonna be ugly when the French military finally does roll, and it will.

They may be French but they are effective in certain situations. They have experience dealing with rowdy North Africans and it usually involves lead.

Yea well these rioters seem to not care if they hurt people. Burning a 56 year old woman and beating a 61 year old man to death deserves haveing the army after their asses!
