Police: Urine From 35 Cats, Not Meth Lab, Caused Odor
POSTED: 10:00 am EST November 8, 2005
NEW KENSINGTON, Pa. -- It stinks! But at least it's not meth.
Police in New Kensington, Pa., worried about a methamphetamine lab when neighbors complained of a strong ammonia-like smell coming from a house. But illegal drugs aren't to blame -- just a lot of cats.
Code enforcement officer Rick Jacobus and police found 35 cats and a dog in the home. Jacobus said there were cats everywhere, from the rafters to the air ducts. The carpets and floor were soaked in cat urine, which was responsible for the strong chemical-like smell.
The tenants were evicted and the animals taken to the local shelter.
Jacobus said he's not sure if any charges will be filed against the landlord. Jacobus just wants the mess cleaned up.
A city ordinance allows up to four cats and two dogs per residence.

Interesting they could confuse the two.
I haven't smelled meth, but I know the stench of cat pee when I smell it.

No kidding. My family is in the renovation business and we have tried to renovate two old-lady-dies-then-her-forty-cats-die-if-they-werent-dead-already houses.
You can't get that stink out.
We sold the first one "as is" at a loss, and ended up using heavy metal equipment on the second.

Anhydrous Ammonia, also used by farmers. One of thwe reasons there are so many meth labs in farm country. It's easy to steal.

Does is smell like ammonia, say when it get damp?
(Not a chemist here)
Next thing you will see cat houses (the literal kind) being used as fronts for meth houses. When that house blows up you are really going to have a toxic site on your hands.

Anhydrous ammonia is liquified gasous ammonia. The ammonia used in cleaning is ammonia dissoved in water. Think of it this way, cleaning ammonia is to anhydrous ammonia as beer is to everclear. What ever the source, ammonia smells like, well, ammonia.
As for hiding meth labs behind cat houses, it was the smell of ammonia that brought the cops in this case, probably wouldn't work.
