NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Pennsylvania ranks first among the top ten worst states for vehicle-deer collisions, according to an insurance survey published Thursday.
Citing claim statistics, auto insurer State Farm said that drivers in Pennsylvania experienced more deer collisions than any other state between July 1, 2004 and June 30, 2005.
State Farm estimates that 1.5 million vehicles collide with deer every year, resulting in 150 motorists deaths and $1.1 billion in vehicle damages.
With deer migrating and mating season occurring between October and December, the auto insurer says a higher number of deer are near roads this time of year.

Somewhere there is a deer reading in a newspaper about the top 10 most dangerous places for deer to cross a road.
I had the "pleasure" of a deer hit just south of Petoskey one winter morning. They head right between the headlights. Very hard to avoid.

Pennsylvania had my vote. I've driven in just about every state and PA beats everyone hands down. I have never seen so many dead deer by the side of the road.
I actually can't believe that WV is not on that list. Per capita we have to be number one. Gotta run.
Solution: 30-06 Springfield
I've heard that it may be even smaller than that if they can find food, water, and cover. Some estimates say that a small herd can live in as little as one square mile if conditions are right. My parents live in a Birmingham, Alabama suburb and have deer tracks all over their yard.
Or it could be the gazillion deer.
The deer are so small here in California that you don't even know when you hit one. On the other hand, one or two elk hits a year gives the emergency rooms a little practice in triage...
I'm shocked too, especially since I almost backed into one at the end of my driveway! The stupid doe just stood there and *stared* at me.
I'm seeing on average at least one deer (live) a day. I've had two near misses this week alone and it's only Tuesday.
It's too expensive to notify Insurance.
Good thing we're not any higher than 10. I can't imagine what our insurance rates would be if we were in the top 5.
Are you sure some of the herds don't move on to look for food?
My state, New Jersey is not on the list for most auto-deer collisions but we are the first in auto insurance payments.
also in the #1 state, I notice they never seem to pick up the dead ones either
I'm from MO, and they (dead deer laying off road) won't make it through a night there, either picked up by workers or coyotes drag off
Did you give them a kick. You might have filled your freezer.
Also they are creatures of habit. When I used to hunt I could tell you where and when a particular buck would show up. Thats why I don't hunt deer any more, no challenge. Now hog hunting with a pistol, thats another matter.
I'm shocked that Montana isn't listed
can't imagine how much damage a Mule Deer would do, be like hitting a horse
Now you know why Georgia allows you to shoot 12 deer this year....
