Army culls 6m birds in bid to contain flu virus

The Guardian (UK)

Chinese troops and farmers have slaughtered 6m poultry in less than 24 hours in one of the biggest culls since the outbreak of avian flu.

The authorities have also banned sales of live chickens in Beijing. The army was mobilised on Saturday in Heishan, in the north-east province of Liaoning, to cull every chicken, duck and wildfowl within a two-mile radius of an outbreak which last week killed 9,000 birds.

China has also asked the World Health Organisation to test whether a 12-year-old girl who died after eating a sick chicken was the first Chinese fatality from H5N1.

We could probably wipe out flu if the Chinese just dropped "organic" farming and started modern farming.

"I think the chinese have just lost the olympics"

2008 is a bit aways for them to cancel the Olympics. China is spending billions of dollars for the Olympic games, so it won`t be cancelled unless it is an incredible threat. But it would be a huge blow to China if they do cancel the games. All that money down the drain.....

The only good thing about China is they don`t have PETA or other environmental organizations to keep them from doing mass bird kills. Although I think it is going to prove useless.

"Several million dead with mass gatherings canceled".

Birds are dying not people. Big difference.

If a human pandemic breaks out then things could change, but until it happens the Olympics will be a go.

Also, there is roughly two and a half years before the Olympics in Beijing, this flu outbreak could be gone by then. Or an immunization could be discovered as well.

Can you get this flu by *eating* a chicken that is sick but has been cooked? If you cook it thoroughly will it be okay? Anybody know?

the problem is not eatting chicken. The problem is that this flu that kills chicken will jump to humans, then HUMAN TO HUMAN. The Problem from there is that it kills about 50% of the people that get it. That means if you if you get sick you might not live out the week.

I know about the mortality rate but still wonder if you eat a chicken that has the virus are you at risk? Some viruses are killed by the acid in your stomach.

I have a question.... Would you eat a chicken when you knew it was infected?

I read about two Chinese brothers who died after drinking 'raw' duck blood. One died and then about a month later, the other.

So, I would guess, if you don't thoroughly cook chicken and you have an infected chicken, you could get it.

Yup. Anything to do with birds including, bird feed companies. We'll all switch to beef and get mad cow disease and won't care what goes on, lol.
