Benjamin A. Reitzes of UBS Investment Research raised his price target and earnings estimates for Apple Computer (nasdaq: AAPL - news - people ) and maintained a "buy" rating on the company after checks revealed strong sales of the new video iPod and iMac G5.
"We believe sales of new iPods are picking up steam into calendar year-end, with new video iPod sales stronger than we expected," said Reitzes. "Also, we believe that the story has more legs as the 'iPod hand-off' to the Mac story continues to takes shape."
The analyst said Apple would introduce more video content and digital entertainment offerings at Macworld in January, helping to drive shares. Checks also indicate that the company may be ready to launch lower-end Intel (nasdaq: INTC - news - people )-based Macs earlier than its original June 2006 target, with the possibility of an Intel-based Mac Mini at Macworld.

Intel macmini rumors ping
?
Has anybody actually bought an expensive Macintosh simply because of a music player?
So how would Apple be able to keep people from porting the OS to AMD based machines?
Sorry beat you to the punch.
j/k, I'm no apple basher.
Proprietary MB cheeps, that's how!
Custom hardware built into the Apple hardware that the OS recognizes and won't run, or won't run correctly if its not there.
That's one way.
I suspect, eventually, it will be hacked to run on non Apple x86 machines.
Apple might actually "look the other way" when it happens.
Another OS to chip away at Bill's defacto monopoly.
499 is expensive for you? I mean the iPod os like minimum 300 anyway. 499 seems in the price range of anyone paying 300 for an mp3 player.
I was just about ready to say that, about the hacking. Either way I think it would profit Apple alot more if they were to allow all x86 chips to use there OS.
It's using the Pentium M, if it doesn't get a specific serial number from the chip it won't run, and aledgedly there's no way to fake the serial number.
People have bought an expensive Mac as well as a music player.
A conservative and a homo? Wow!
Just kidding. I'm own/use a PowerBook G4 with the lovely 17". Much better than my old PC in operation and fit/finish.
Make it compatible with Intel platforms and I'll definitely take a stab at it.
I am a little weird. I'm still married to my first wife...
Unfortunately, that does seem to be unusual these days!
Have you been using Macs for long? A guy down the hall in my office owns a Mac-only service company. He showed me some real antiques the other day. They were, from what he told me, Macintoshes before they were Apple. Predating the Apple IIe by some years. I asked if they had the same trouble with the Y2K thing and he said the date went as recent as 1993. No video editing on that bad boy.
My box is simply a internet connection for me. No Geek in this house. MY granddaughter had to show me how to download RUSH to my iPod..
One thing is for sure, Apple has put the fun back into computing... The PC makers are juuuuuuust coming round to copying Apple style -- about time..
