If you were within the permit both in activities and position then it sounds like the the expulsion was wrong.. were you given any reasons?
Even if the expulsion were somehow justified you it sounds like you should have grounds for complaint on the destruction of evidence situation.
Strategy-wise you might think about writing to the chief of police and copying the President of the university...
