After ten nights of violence, the riots have spread to the provinces PRESIDENT CHIRAC and his Government were struggling to reassert their authority yesterday after the epidemic of arson in suburban immigrant estates spread to all corners of France, including the heart of the capital.

In the tenth successive night of violence on Saturday, more than 1,300 vehicles were set alight and 312 people arrested as youths in the provinces, mostly teenagers, joined in the fire-raising spree that broke out in the northeast Paris suburbs on October 27.

Arsonists hit the Lille area in the north, Strasbourg in the east, Lyons in the southeast, Nice and Cannes on the Mediterranean and Toulouse and Bordeaux to the southwest.

Evreux, a Normandy city known for its bleak estates, was hardest hit. At least 50 vehicles were incinerated and fires destroyed or damaged businesses at a shopping centre, a post office and two schools.

Interesting (true) thing -- they used carts etc. to block the roads. So when they re-built Paris, they built wide streets that couldn't be blockaded.

I can't recall reading were any of these rioters have actually been shot with a real (not rubber) bullet. A few of them getting iced and the car burning will probably slow down if not stop.

Anarchy is cool only until you have to give your life for it - then it ain't so cool anymore.

"Yes, multi-culturalism is worderful. 100 years ago, this would have been unthinkable

Socialists of 50 years ago may have been more conservative than many Republicans today. One thing is for sure, the Socialists will not learn and will find something or someone else to blame for all this failure of their vision.

This is an auto-disaster. 1300 vehicles torched in one night, 3500 in the last 10 nights (enough wheels to carpool every American lost in 911 and Iraq) and over 30,000 for the year in a country of 60 million. That would be the equivalent of 150,000 vehicles torched in a country our size. Does anyone know how many actually have burned here this year? I don't, although I recall ecoterrorists torching a few dealerships. And we thought just Americans hated French cars.

We should offer France all the help we can. It will take them forever to make enough replacements on their 35 hour work weeks. Detroit can sell them some, but many of those who lost will be poor folks who won't be able to afford new models. They'll want to buy used. We need someone who can work with our used car salesmen to find them the deals no one else can arrange. Bush should again appoint Bill Clinton for this task. He's a natural. I bet he could find a large assortment of recently fireproofed vehicles at storm sale prices ready to ship out of a former French port.

I know for a fact that not a single car was torched during the NYC draft riots or the French Revolution!

How about during a celebration of a Pistons championship?

Maybe the riots are a blessing in disguise. Maybe just maybe the Westerner will wake up and move to expel the third worlders that do not belong in our society.

What i think is intersting is that the French did get rid of Muslim head scarves in schools.

They issued an edict, but who knows how and whether it is being enforced. My guess is, spotty at best, and easily ignored.

"They celebrated the Pistons in France?"

I don't believe they celebrate the Pistons in NYC, either.

Should we include or exclude the police Crown Vics in the total?

"Anarchy is cool only until you have to give your life for it - then it ain't so cool."

Shoot. Anarchy is only cool until you have to live with it. I was in Seattle during the WTO riots. What a bunch of crack-smoking, bong-inhaling, gee-your-hair-doesn't-smell-terrific, boneheads. The citizens who had their businesses vandalized were left to clean up.

Still, the leftists love 'em.

Are American men different? Headscarves are supposedly necessary to keep women from tempting men by showung off their hair. I have never heard of an American man going apeshit and losing his senses because he saw a woman's hair. Have you?
