The man behind a new documentary on suicide bombers opening in San Francisco next week said he found "enormous human depth" within them.
Hany Abu-Assad, who describes himself as a Palestinian, says when he set out to research suicide bombers in the West Bank, he imagined them as heartless monsters.
"Like anybody else," director of "Paradise Now" said in an interview with the San Jose Mercury News, "I thought they had been brainwashed."
No longer.
"When you do research, you discover two things,'' he says. "You are shocked that there is enormous human depth in these kinds of people. They may make the wrong decision, but there is humanity in their thoughts. And secondly, you are in shock that you were so ignorant. It is obvious that they are human beings! How could I think that they weren't human beings, that they were monsters?''
Putting a human face was "not the goal of his movie, explains Abu-Assad, "it is the starting point."
Abu-Assad blames Israeli occupation for the bombings.
"I just want people to be able to see it from the other side,'' he says. "I don't want to push the other side. In all heavy occupations, there have been suicide bombings. In Sri Lanka, in Korea, Japan. People do it because they can't stand the daily humiliation of the occupation, because they feel so weak that they can't do anything about it. They want to change this weakness to enormous power.''
The movie has been purchased by Warner Independent Pictures for exclusive distribution rights in the U.S.
What "occupation"? This is the Promised Land given by God to the Jews, there is absolutely no nation in the history or the world called "Palestine", at best it was a description of a territory of the British Empire, but over 90% of that was in present-day Jordan.
No "barf alert"?
I don't think 6 feet is that much depth.
Hany Abu-Assad needs to be relocated (dirt or Turdland).
I think the title did it all by itself.
Ping
I think they meant "height" although some body parts go higher than others.
There is a limit to how long the title can be.
Well then, he probably is.
"You are shocked that there is enormous human depth in these kinds of people. They may make the wrong decision, but there is humanity in their thoughts. And secondly, you are in shock that you were so ignorant. It is obvious that they are human beings! How could I think that they weren't human beings, that they were monsters?''
Words fail me.
The title does say it all. Barf alert would have been redundant.
Next it will be some nut finding great depth in Hitler, Pol Pot, Sadaam Hussein, Stalin, and Jack the Ripper. Nothing new here, same old plot evil is now "good."
There is enormous human depth in these kinds of people
Well, that, and plus, they kill a lot of dirty JOOOOOSSS too, right?

"You know, I'm going to start thanking
the woman who cleans the restroom in
the building I work in. I'm going to start
thinking of her as a human being"
Were?
Noooo. They are not people. They are dangerous animals. Nothing more. Extermination is the only thing for them. Preferably without too much colateral damage to innocent civilians.
I'm not surprised at the breadth of them once the explosives go off. They are spread across the countryside very broadly.
Oh yes, there was brainwashing, the author had his brain pan cleaned pretty good to write something like this.
Oh yeah, and BLEAH!!!!
I think he meant breadth. Splash must be 35 feet or so.
I wish they were all the ones that go off early when no one is around.
