LUCKNOW, India (AP) - A Hindu mob attacked a Muslim village in northern India, torching homes and killing three people, after hearing rumors that cows, considered holy by Hindus, were slaughtered for Islamic celebrations, police said Sunday.
Hindus from neighboring areas attacked Mehndipur village in the northern Uttar Pradesh state on Saturday night and set fire to dozens of houses after being told villagers had killed the cows for a feast to mark Eid-al-Fitr, the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, the day before, said S. B. Shirodkar, a local police chief.
Three Muslims died and more than 40 houses were torched, Shirodkar said. He said a police investigation revealed no cow had been slaughtered in the village.
Authorities deployed paramilitary forces in and around Mehndipur, about 20 miles east of the state capital, Lucknow. Uttar Pradesh is India's most populous state, and about 15 percent of its 180 million people are Muslims.
Muslims form nearly 16 percent of India's 1 billion people, and simmering tensions with the majority Hindus often spill over into rioting

Cool! I wonder how muslims react when confronted by people whose religious beliefs are as insane as their own?
I'd typically agree with you, but rioting over the slaughter of a cow is utterly ridiculous and isn't that much different than Muslims rioting over a cartoon or a rumor.
While past incidents may have fueled anti-Muslim sentiment, I would hope no one would applaud nutjobs killing people for a RUMOR that they ate something the nuts didn't approve of.
They spoke of villages too and I can imagine this involves people on every side who are not exactly sophisticated and given to trust in a Western, disciplined way of handling such disputes.

That's 219 more virgins to be called home.
Too bad the French don't consider cars holy.
This week, Hindus celebrate Diwali, a fact left out of the article. (The Muslim holiday was mentioned, but not the Hindu one.) So perhaps the Hindus saw this incident/rumor as an particular insult.

It seems that governments all over the world will rush troops to the scene every time a muslim breaks a fingernail, but they always look the other way whenever muslims attack/slaughter/rape non-muslims.
Why is that?
Come one now. These muslims that died did nothing but go about their lives. Indian muslims are one of the most mellowed bunch. They are given political voice in a free democracy, and for the most part, this opportunity is wisely used.
Sure, there are some crazies and these types are there in every religion and in every geography.
There is no excuse to condone this type of violence, no matter who it is directed against.

In case there is confusion, there are many slaughter houses in India, and they export Beef. There is also some local consumption of beef. So, it is not something unheard of.
I am a Hindu and wish there was no eating cow. But, I realize that other people have a different viewpoint and enjoy their steak.
