Thousand cars torched in latest French riots Sun Nov 6, 2005 12:17 PM GMT

By Elisabeth Pineau

PARIS (Reuters) - Gangs of youths torched 1,300 vehicles overnight in the 10th consecutive night of violence in Paris's poor suburbs and major French towns, despite the deployment of thousands of extra police.

Cars were burnt out in the historic centre of Paris for the first time on Saturday night. In the normally quiet Normandy town of Evreux, a shopping mall, 50 vehicles, a post office and two schools went up in flames.

Authorities have so far found no way beyond appeals and more police to address a problem with complex social, economic and racial causes.

Evreux mayor Jean-Louis Debre, a confidant of President Jacques Chirac and speaker of the lower house of parliament, told France Info radio:

"To those responsible for the violence, I want to say: Be serious ... If you want to live in a fairer, more fraternal society, this is not how to go about it."

The deaths 10 days ago of two youths apparently fleeing police ignited pent up frustrations among young men, many of them Muslims of North and black African origin, at racism, unemployment, their marginal place in French society and their treatment by the police.

"Many youths have never seen their parents work and couldn't hold down a job if they got one," said Claude Chevallier, manager of a burned-out carpet depot in the rundown Paris suburb of Aulnay-sous-Bois.

But authorities now say the rolling nightly riots are being organised via the Internet and mobile phones, and have pointed the finger at drug traffickers and Islamist militants.

Overnight, 1,295 vehicles were torched across France, the highest total so far, police said. An extra 2,300 officers have been drafted in.

Seven police helicopters buzzed over the Paris region through the night, filming disturbances and directing mobile squads to incidents. Overnight, police made 349 arrests.

The number of incidents in the Paris region was similar to the night before, but in the provinces it was up sharply.

TARNISHED IMAGE

The violence has tarnished France's image abroad, forcing Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin to cancel a trip to Canada, while Russia and the United States have warned their citizens to avoid Paris's troubled suburbs.

Villepin has combined a call for an end to the riots with dialogue with community leaders, youngsters and local officials, and has promised an action plan for 750 tough neighbourhoods.

"I'll make proposals as early as this week," the weekly Journal du Dimanche quoted him as saying.

But it remained unclear what could stop the violence, though some opposition parties have suggested a symbolic measure -- the resignation of Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy.

Accused of stoking passions by calling troublemakers "scum", Sarkozy has ignored calls to quit. A survey published on Sunday indicated his public image was holding up, even if many disapproved of his strong language.

Villepin also has ambitions to be the right wing's presidential candidate in 2007 and has tried to position himself as a much more consensual figure than Sarkozy; the effect on the crisis on his ratings is still unclear.

With no end in sight to the nights of wailing sirens, acrid smoke, stone-throwing and destruction, residents from all ethnic backgrounds are tiring of the unrest.

"My kids can't sleep at night," said a mother named Samia in Aulnay-sous-Bois. "They hear explosions, they see fires and they think they're in a war. When the slightest thing happens, they get anxious and say 'Mama, what's going on?'"

Perhaps Zarqawi will pull out of Iraq and go for the easy win.

"To those responsible for the violence, I want to say: Be serious, if you want to live in a fairer, more fraternal society, this is not how to go about it."

Ultimately, they want to live in an Islamic society where you either convert or die. Fairness and fraternity have nothing to do with it.

France is so far gone, they don't even have the sense to save themselves. Anyone who suggests they do something is beaten down with PC slogans and cowardice. Sad.

Even if they somehow break free from the thought control of political correctness, it's still to late. They have sent a message of weakness to radical Islam. Their country is ripe for the taking.

We made the same mistakes by not responding to attack after attack back in the 90's. Osama Bin Laden said that he figured it would be easy to topple our country with 9/11 because we appeared weak. Watch out France, this is only the beginning of your troubles.

I get so infuriated with Republican timidity, cowering, and appeasement of democrats. The main goal of the Democrat party is to turn this country into France. They hold that the French and Europeans are to be admired, that their system is superior to ours. The Republicans need to point this out to the voters constantly.

If our citizens are ever tricked into voting democrats back into power,(resulting from Republican timidity and laziness, or pubs not bothering to point out the profound differences between the 2 parties to the people) our country will end up being just like France, including all the chaos and confusion.

If, God forbid, a terror attack should occur with the dems in charge, the response will be just what it was in New Orleans after the hurricane- hysterical liberals pointing fingers of blame at each other while doing nothing .(There won't be any Republicans to take over and get things done).

Every time I read anything about France, I'm reminded of why I will NEVER, EVER vote democrat. I don't want my country, and fellow citizens, to become so messed up by liberalism and political correctness that they lose all common sense, to the point that they don't even have the will to save or defend themselves.

I suppose prayers are in order for the French- They will need them.

A form of disponibility is if a corrupt County judge decided America was at the disponibility of his county, he would purposefuly charge people of any crime as they cross his county line, thus making them pay fines and court appearance fees for the rest of their lives, keeping them there. It's virutal slavery, basicaly.

The socialists, like ths muslims, want the nation to be at the disponibility of certain individuals of their liking fitting a specific social profile, origin or what not. These people, in the name of social justice, rake in fees and fines from the rest.

Ultimately Leninist confederate communism is the result as one tyrant seeks the whole world to be at the disponibility of his narrow needs and concerns of the day.

There is a right wing in France and it's growing. By right wing I don't mean falsely labeled conservatives - I mean the kind of people who would have cheered the Nazis except they hate Germans too.

Oh, right wing socialists...French Nazis.

Yes, they have nothing in common with freedom loving American Constitutionalists.

Another pathetic step in the march of dhimmitude. It's not enough for Islamo-fascists to despise all other cultures and brutalize their own peoples, they must come to our countries and tell US how to live..... unreal. Gee, maybe this will get the lefties who hang out at Starbucks and Seattle's Best Coffee up in arms..... they'll say "we bow down to Islamo-fascists on everything else, but don't take away our coffee!"

"What's that Sura that tells muslims to start killing the infidel after the end of Ramadan (holy days)? We have seven days (I think) until it ends...I wonder if the riots will evolve then."

All the fighting and killing and plundering and maiming stuff out of their disgusting book is here:
http://www.prophetofdoom.net/quotes1.html#fighting

But this one is my favourite:
Tabari IX:69 “Arabs are the most noble people in lineage, the most prominent, and the best in deeds. We were the first to respond to the call of the Prophet. We are Allah’s helpers and the viziers of His Messenger. We fight people until they believe in Allah. He who believes in Allah and His Messenger has protected his life and possessions from us. As for one who disbelieves, we will fight him forever in the Cause of Allah. Killing him is a small matter to us.”

I LOVE Free Republic. Rapid Response Team in action again!

Checking in briefly while drying my daughter's hair and getting them to bed.

I could not agree with you more Leni, everyone contributes what they know and very soon, the truth is sorted out.

And thanks to you, Dane, for making what is a very important thread (given the implications), and yet what is understandably (given the underwhelming response to Iraq, and the fact that thousands of Americans died to clean up France's mess in what was known then, I think IndoChina) one that most American conservatives don't give a ... darn about.

LOL! I just had to chime in one more time at your post.

Thank God for the American military. And God bless them in this struggle for the survival of Western civilization.

And I'm only 42. I expect this to go on for a long time, even though I wish I could live to see total victory.

Here's a theory. Humans have a conscience. Act in discord with it...and the result is guilt and eventually depression...ultimately hell.

Pray to Allah (of Islam) and read the Quran and the Hadiths...and accept that the Allah of Islam is the creator...and the spirit of the Prophet enters your soul. And his soul is infected with that of Allah.

Conscience becomes perverted...it is erased and rewritten to obey its new master.

This is the nature of our enemy. They mean no harm except that their goal is harm...harm, submission or death to all that are not willingly possessed by the same spirit.

Here's lentulusgracchus discussing this very topic. Nazis are not right wing. "National SOCIALISTS", remember? Left wing, not right wing.

I think this is about the destruction of Sarkozy. Chirac will allow Paris/France to burn to rid himself of this opponent.

Sarkozy has been described as the French Right's best hope for the 2007 presidential elections.
