A panel of authors who have written books about Hollywood debate the impact of communism on the film industry at the 2005 Liberty Film Festival in West Hollywood, California. The participants include Richard Schickel, "Elia Kazan: A Biography," Ron Radosh, "Red Star over Hollywood," James Hirsen, Hollywood Nation," Ed Rampell, "Progressive Hollywood," Jeff Britting, "Ayn Rand: An Illustrated Life," and Patrick Goldstein, Los Angeles Times film critic.
Not from where I sit, they blended together swimmingly. Just like chocolate and peanut butter.
No. It was a threat to Americans.
It's a good panel presentation!
Was Naziism a threat to Hitler?
There's a difference?
frankfurt school moves west and takes over
It was a threat but then it took hollywood over so its no longer a threat to hollywood.
McCarthy was right !
I don't know if it was a threat, but it was something of a fact of life.
What galls me is the belief many liberals have - that Communists weren't dangerous, just different. That perception is re-enforced in the movie "Good Night And Good Luck."
The American Communist Party was different in the same way the Ku Klux Klan and the Nazi Party were different. Each was dedicated to social change through the use of violence and coercion.
Neither means of expression is covered in the Bill of Rights.
In the CPUSA's case, their stated objective was the overthrow of the United States government. And for those who shrug off the threat, remember that the CPUSA of the 40's and 50's took their orders from the worst butcher in human history.
It is true that many innocent people in this country lost their jobs in the hysteria that swept the country. But it's also true that many more people all over the world lost their lives because of the treasonous acts committed by Communists at home. Start with Julius and Ethel Rosenberg.
If liberals could acknowlege this simple fact, I might actually have something in common with them.
"Was Communism a Threat to Hollywood?"
Was? Still seems to be, although, perhaps more its ideological cousin, socialism.
I friggin' hate peanut butter.
Looking forward to seeing this on tomorrows repeat. Too bad they didn't get Peter Schweizer, author of Reagan's War, which chronicled those years and Ronald Reagans involvement.
or
Communism was a threat from Hollywood.
Your Communism is in my Hollywood!
Your Hollywood is in my Communism!
Probably showing my age with this wisecrack....
Probably showing mine by saying I get it.
about 10 years ago i saw this article about a congressional commmission in the 1960's headed by, i believe, then congressman frank church. the report showed how communists intended to take over america. i have not been able to find this article and wish a more experienced researcher would look into this. i think it is very relevant because all the ways are very seeable in our society now. some of the ways were taking over the media, flooding america with illegal immigrants, putting communist leaning professors and teachers in our education system. forty years later many of these findings are coming true. hope someone looks into this .
thanks
