PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: The Summit of the Americas wrapped up in Argentina, and the presidential party headed for Brazil. President left the summit on schedule, before leaders reached any agreement on a declaration concerning the future of hemisphere-wide trade talks. Discussions at the summit were more than three hours behind schedule when the presidential party left as planned at 3:30 p.m. local time. Tom Shannon, assistant U.S. Secretary of State for the western hemisphere, stayed behind to represent the U.S. in the talks.
On Friday, President Bush said he was disappointed by the decision by Senate Judiciary Chairman Arlen Specter to put off Judge Samuel Alito's confirmation hearing until January. The President had hoped to get Judge Alito confirmed by the end of the year. GWB said Sen. Specter told him the reason why the committee could not meet the President's timetable was because "Alito had written so many opinions" that Specter and others wanted time to read them.
In the meantime, more positive news the media will ignore. Following is an excerpt from a statement released today by Martin J. Blaser, MD, president of the Infectious Diseases Society of America:
The Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) applauds President Bush and his administration for outlining an aggressive domestic and international approach to pandemic influenza preparedness and giving this issue the high level of attention that it warrants. IDSA has long urged the U.S. government to develop preparedness and response strategies to limit the death, pain, human suffering, and economic burden that will result from a pandemic.
IDSA believes the pandemic clock is ticking; we just don't know what time it is. By strengthening global surveillance activities and reinvigorating the development of vaccines and antivirals, the president's strategy will go a long way toward pandemic influenza preparedness. This preparedness will yield important health benefits, even if the next pandemic does not appear for years.
THE WEEK AHEAD: Following the Summit in Argentina, the President and Mrs. Bush will visit Brazil on November 5-6 at the invitation of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. He will then travel to Panama on November 6-7 to meet with President Martin Torrijos Espino.
After returning to Washington, President Bush will attend an election-eve rally for Virginia gubernatorial candidate Jerry W. Kilgore in Richmond Monday night
President Bush will welcome Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh to the White House November 10 for talks about the war on terrorism and other issues.
QUOTE OF THE DAY: From the President's remarks to the White House press corps travel pool at Summit of the Americas in Argentina:
Q: Mr. President, you're likely to cross paths with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez at this summit. How should Americans think about this president who has said many hostile things about you and your administration? Do you think of him as another Castro? And if you see him this afternoon, do you have any words for him?
THE PRESIDENT: Well, I will, of course, be polite. That's what the American people expect their President to do, is to be a polite person. And I will -- if I run across him, I will do just that. My attitude toward any leader...I judge leaders based upon their willingness to protect institutions...for a viable democratic society. And to the extent that any leader undermines the free press, we will speak out. To the extent that any leader makes it difficult to worship freely, we will make our positions known. To the extent that the judiciary is not an independent organization -- in other words, to the extent that there's not proper checks and balances, we will express our positions.

(For those who don't recognize it, this is the Texas State Flag.)
Pinging you to the Saturday Dose.
Woohoo!

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY TO THE PRESIDENT AND HIS BELOVED LAURA, and many more.

Lyrics to The Anniversary Song, by Al Jolson and Saul Chaplin
Oh, how we danced on the night we were wed
We vowed our true love, though a word wasn't said.
The world was in bloom, there were stars in the skies
Except for the few that were there in your eyes.
Dear, as I held you so close in my arms
Angels were singing a hymn to your charms,
Two hearts gently beating, murmuring low
My darling, I love you so.
The night seemed to fade into blossoming dawn
The sun shone anew but the dance lingered on.
Could we but recall that sweet moment sublime
We'd find that our love is unaltered by time.
Dear, as I held you so close in my arms
Angels were singing a hymn to your charms,
Two hearts gently beating, murmuring low
My darling, I love you so.

Top ten?

President Bush talks with Kirchner as Argentina's Foreign Minister, Rafel Bielsa, looks on.
I guess it is a good thing he isn't in France this week.

Thank you--it was purely by accident that I heard the ping that quickly!
Wolf...sorry I posted the graphic so quickly...I got carried away by the Texas flag! LOL!

The earpiece is in his other ear and Condi is in a different spot in this photo. Maybe it was taken during a different session from when the above photo was shot. Maybe Chavez was yapping his trap at both sessions. Like all tinpot tyrants, the man sure loves to hear himself speak.

Here, Condi's expression looks fierce as she appears ready to crack a joke. If this weren't a family thread, I'd come up with some fierce jokes about Chavez myself.
