Good post. According to the latest this violence is spreading virtually nationwide. YOu would think Chirac and company would realize they are way past the point of having a dialogue with these thugs.

He is making a political point and powerplay. If these folks burn down their cities, he can blame it on someone else. There is no chance of these folks marching into Paris and seizing power. It simply is an inconvenience for the political elite.

YOu would think Chirac and company would realize they are way past the point of having a dialogue with these thugs.Chirac is all talk, and no action. Here's what Chirac was saying almost 8 years ago, in 1998 when cars were being burned by mooligans in Neuhof, near Strasbourg.
French President Jacques Chirac, in his annual New Year message, denounced growing violence in France and urged people to help the police control the problem. He said: "There is too much violence in our country, too much insecurity - in the schools, on public transport. Every day new limits are broken beyond which our society will disintegrate."
Cars are now burned annually, on January 1, in Neuhof.

You and I would think that. However, remember that Mr. Chirac may well be in the pocket of the rioters. He opposed the war in Iraq and just lost an election. My sinister brain thinks this would be a way of him burning the nation behind him - as in, "...if I can't have it nobody can!" type of turncoatism.
What is most frightening is France's nuclear arsenal. I'm sure they have other goodies that could fall into the wrong hands as well. The question may now be - will the people of France stand up and save their own country?
