SAN DIEGO -- In the final days of her campaign for mayor of the nation's seventh-largest city, Donna Frye is being asked about her image as a lightweight surfer chick.
"Go ahead and think of me as a lightweight," she told a moderator during a live television debate Wednesday. "You might be surprised."
Frye, a Democratic councilwoman and surf-shop owner, came within a whisker of winning the job during a write-in bid in November 2004. But a year later, it doesn't appear the city is ready for Mayor Frye despite her bigger-budget campaign and a more polished image.
With the election Tuesday, she is the underdog against Jerry Sanders, an avuncular Republican former police chief who enjoys solid backing from the city's well-heeled business establishment. Critics and some Republicans describe Sanders as a clone of former Mayor Dick Murphy, someone who won't rock the boat in this seaside city of 1.3 million people.

So sad: Frye taking no "leadership" position other than a promise to micro manage all decisions.
Sanders claiming management/organizational skills cuz he headed S.D. PD, & a couple of corrupt charities.
Both are lacking, but Frye far more so.
Arnie's got an edge in dealing w/ the problems, though.
If his initiatives fail, he can say "you had your chance" and go to sleep
The SD mayor will be under constant bombardment and can't walk away.
There was only one REAL surfing mayor in SD and that was Roger Hedgecock.
And he barely took the oath of office before the establishment ran his ass out of city hall on a rail. :-(

Your dreaming won't make it so.
When the Red Cross was being lead by a person who put
it in the dump, it was Sanders who cleaned it up.
As a former Chief of Police and other areas of leadership
he is in a better position to lead the City and the
people he intends to bring in are high quality.
As a 58 yr native of the city I think he has more leadership than many who have ran for mayor of the past
decades.
What shop does she own? Anyone?
better than Pete Wilson ?
better than Pete Wilson ?
What Pete had to face and what Sanders has to face
are two different multi situations.
Sanders can be probably better.
One thing for sure, he won't drive business out of the
city like Dippy Donna will.
If they don't vote for Sanders or just sit at home
they will get the PC queen & union whore, Dippy Donna
Donna's not a lightweight. She's actually very calculating but maintains a public persona of the "surfer chick" just like so many other Dems maintain personas designed to fool constituents. She decries closed door counsel meetings but never met one she didn't involve herself in. She voted a dozen or more times for the pension mess before the voted against it. She also claims she tried but just can't seem to get rid of those phantom years she bought for her own pension benefit. Bull, she doesn't doesn't want to pay the taxes.
Sanders is a bad choice, more middle-manager political hack than visionary leader. He was pulled in from the establishment and backed by one of the architects of San Diego's pension mess: Jack McGrory.
They used to run Harry's Surf Shop in Ocean Beach. I don't know if they actually have a business now or not.
