WASHINGTON — Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (WMT) lowers consumer costs and adds jobs but has also led to a decline in wages and an increase in the number of people relying on government aid for health care, studies released on Friday show. At a conference sponsored by Wal-Mart to examine its impact on the U.S. economy, researchers found that the world's biggest retailer accounted for some 210,000 net jobs last year while driving nominal wages down 2.2 percent.

"..led to a decline in wages and an increase in the number of people relying on government aid for health care.."

I hope they did not spent lots of money on this study. Isn't it obvious what WMT has done to our economy?

Ya, that's the ticket...

Evil mind control that forces consumers to shop at Wal-Mart...

I am not among the Walmart haters.

Neither am I and just from personal observation of the hundreds of Wal-Mart threads, neither are most members here. From observation of packed Wal-Mart parking lots, neither are most Americans.

The Government did this study? Who paid for this and who actually did the study?

"researchers found that the world's biggest retailer accounted for some 210,000 net jobs last year while driving nominal wages down 2.2 percent."

But I would think the "employee discount" would more than compensate for that.

I'm not one based on the reasons given above, either... I also tend not to shop there because I have found it does not save me money (they have fantastic teaser prices and from there I've found price suffers and the quality of many products is questionable)...

What I DO object to is some of the manner in which Walmart treats its suppliers. And others are learning from it. My employer just stopped selling to Costco because of completely unrealistic demands. Buy the product or don't - but you don't need to use threats or insist we do your job for you.... Our competition will make sure that we do our job well and sell to you at a good price...

You need to read all of the studies. The bottom line was that one of the studies showed a decline in local wages (another did not), but the decline in overall prices paid in the local area was more than the decline in wages!

Also with a higher concentration of lower wage earners in one location and with info Wal-mart provides, the people learned more about getting government aid. It was not because they were paying lower wages or benefits. They were paying prevailing wages for comparable retail employees.

"they have fantastic teaser prices and from there I've found price suffers and the quality of many products is questionable".

I have not found this to be true. First of all Wal-Mart does not do much advertising here. I have found that in most cases their price is equal to or better than any of the competition. I find the quality very good. Most of the items they sell you can buy elsewhere.

None of these studies seem to take into account the taxes that Walmart pays...I have to believe that the tax revenue generated will more than offset the increased medicaide assistance. as far as walmart forcing their suppliers overseas....that is BS...unions demanded uneconomical wages for the manufacturing sector and they all ended up with no jobs because of it. Also, these studies don't take into account the jobs that come from other companies that want to be in the same developments as the walmart because of the traffic they draw....these companies are paying higher wages than walmart and wouldn't be there otherwise.

yea, it's only those of us who actually pay taxes that Walmart's existence is a liability!
But the Waltons and the Chicoms appreciate your patronage.

Walmart's average wage is $9.89 an hour....that is way more than the current minimum wage.

"Walmart's average wage is $9.89 an hour....that is way more than the current minimum wage."

And I bet it is higher than places like Hechts, Mom and Pops, and most others.

They eroded wages by 2.2% or roughly 20 cents an hour. $8 a week...$32 a month....hardly the reason that people can no longer afford health care.
