FRANKLIN, Tenn. Mindy McCready (search) says she still loves the man charged with nearly beating her to death earlier this year, and her two suicide attempts were the result of their troubled relationship.
"I wanted him to be sorry," McCready said Thursday about her boyfriend, William McKnight (search), on Oprah Winfrey's talk show.
McKnight was charged with attempted murder in May after he allegedly broke into the singer's home and assaulted her.
McCready, 29, had a No. 1 hit in 1996 with "Guys Do It All the Time," but has suffered a series of legal and personal problems in the last year.
During the interview, McCready described the attack

It does take courage ... with God's help ... I'm glad you made it.
In her mind, this IS love. She would never admit that she feels guilty about her father (the usual culprit) abusing her, but she does. And, in her twisted way, she thinks abuse (love) is what she deserves.
What ever happened to her and Superman?
Yup. No doubt about it whatsoever.
I just with more women would wake up and see it for what it is. IT'S NOT THEIR FAULT that they are getting abused.
One of the most common lines used by the abuser is, "You made me do it" or "You made me so mad I couldn't help it"
The abused somehow feel like if they hadn't said X then Y would not have happened. Next time they try harder to please the abuser, so they won't get abused.
It's a viscous cycle that leaves the abused with zero self esteem.
This woman is a classic example of what happends if you don't get out.
I fear what the Oxycotin overdose (I think that's what she overdosed on) will do to that baby.
A tactic also used by the left in excusing/explaining terrorists attacks.
Major denial.
Stupid is as stupid does.
She doesn't look anything like that anymore.
Good one - very good observation!! LOL!
Pregnant and overdosed on drugs two months ago? She's a huge loser
I saw her on Oprah yesterday and she is still in extreme denial. Still lying to cover up for him.
Not for much longer. The Report Abuse link works well for getting such things corrected.
And, according to the article, she admits that he hasn't shown any remorse. This is just so sad.
"Women are just stupid sometimes..I guess shes gonna have to get killed before she learns...Sad"
Correct. She got just short of killed and is still stupid. I really feel sorry for any kids she has.
How did Oprah respond? Isn't she against abusers big time?
Nice move getting that video back in circulation - one of my all time favs!

The abuser won't/can't take responsibility for their actions and the 'victim' thinks they should. That itself is really an abidication of responsibility for their own actions (or inaction as the case may be) which is the excusing of the violence.
They have to excuse it because if they don't there's nothing left but to face the truth. The truth being that the abuser will never change (possible but highly unlikely) and they (the 'victim') made a mistake in judgment and the only way to correct it is to make a strong stand all on their own. Something they have probably never done before in a relationship or they wouldn't be there.
Another responsibility the 'victim' is loathe to face is the fact that staying and excusing the abuse is nothing short of validating it in the abusers mind. 'Enabling' is the hip term for it I think. There is no love or compassion for the abuser in doing that.
