In Louisiana, Worker Influx Causes Ill Will
New York Times ^ | November 4, 2005 | LESLIE EATON

GOOD HOPE, La. - Near this speck on the map southwest of New Orleans, where an oil refinery spouts flames into the sky and alligators are said to lurk in the green canals, sits something that is causing consternation across Louisiana: a camp for out-of-state workers cleaning up after the flood. The camp, operated by a New York company called LVI Services, is not much to look at: a row of tractor-trailers crammed with bunks, a long line of portable toilets, a couple of R.V.'s and three tents with striped roofs. Gun-packing guards wear black T-shirts reading, "Police." It is a temporary home for hundreds of LVI's workers, some of whom said they were in the United States illegally. They are commuting into New Orleans, swabbing the mold off walls, ripping the guts out of buildings, removing mountains of soggy debris.

Think the author has an agenda?

I work about two miles from this location. This is the first I have ever heard about this camp. Outrage? I think not! Definitely an axe to grind.

Exactly. Only when "illegal workers" challenges the need for our extensive welfare state.

Did you see what else the Times did this week, with the letter from the soldier who was recently killed in action?

Somone has to do the work!
I went through the same thing in Fla after Ivan. I needed a new roof and the local contractors raised their prices in hopes of a quick buck.
A Texas company replaced my roof for 25% less.
Locals here thought that they were worth more than $10 an hour for menial work. SURPRISE! People that really need work are willing to do it. The people of N.O. that can't "find" work need to reevaluate their needs. If my family was hungry, $8 and hour or $10 a refridgerator sounds like supper on the table to me. Heaven forbid I'd have to work harder...

Dan: Point taken, I agree that someone has to do the work. I have also employed Illegal Immagrants from time to time and have been impressed with their work ethic as well as the quality of their work.
I just think that we will have to solve this problem sooner or later. Either make these illegal immigrants legal or get them out.

What is the problem? The illegals are only taking the jobs even African-Americans won't. Soon they will be living in the houses that even African-Americans won't live in.

Not to mention somebody comparing the camp to Mexico!

It's funny to finally hear the Times be negative about illegal aliens. Of course, there's an obvious subtext as to why they're holding that opinion in this article.

The people who want them all to stay say we can't get them all out. So, how many are we willing to let stay here? Bear Stearnsl calculated a year ago that there were 20 million. 3 million cross a year (that we know of). We have 3.6 million visa overstays somewhere,in the country. Shall we give them all amnesty?

--- You will have to ask the original poster. I was agreeing with him.
