PARIS, Nov 3 (AFP) - One of France's most prominent Muslim leaders Thursday urged the state to show "respect" for his community, after a seventh night of battles between angry youths and police in high-immigration suburbs of Paris.
Speaking to faithful in the Paris mosque, Dalil Boubakeur, president of the French Council for the Muslim Religion, said Muslim immigrants deserved better than their current lot.
"Our immigrant brothers in Paris and in France must be given the conditions to live with dignity as human beings," not in "disgraceful squats", Boubakeur said, referring to the low-income suburbs where the trouble has broken out.
"This is our hope, this is our wish and is an
address to the French authorities, to (president Jacques) Chirac who is a friend to Muslims, a friend to Islam," he said.
"The community deserves respect because it is respectful, young people need to find the way back to calm, our mosques need to be respected," Boubakeur said.
The firing of a police teargas canister at a packed mosque in Clichy-sous-Bois, epicentre of the violence that has affected more than a dozen Paris suburbs since last Thursday, added to the community anger at the weekend.
France is home to Europe's largest Muslim community, estimated at around five million people.
""Our immigrant brothers in Paris and in France must be given the conditions to live with dignity as human beings," not in "disgraceful squats", Boubakeur said, referring to the low-income suburbs where the trouble has broken out."
If they don't like the housing, they can move. That is not a 'Let them eat cake" statement. No one forces them to stay there.
What? The Legacy Media hiding stuff? You must be kidding!
</sarcasm*>
Muslim riots will never happen in America. Detroit might riot, but it won't be about Muslim rights.
What is French for "No justice, no peace" and "Burn, baby, burn"? This guy is the muslim Maxine Waters.
Were I President, I'd tell them:
"R-E-S-P-E-C-T...Find out what it means TO ME!"
Shakedown time, we here in the states get this all the time, "pony up or get burned out." But our "leaders" are part of the charade because taking money from the decent and giving it to the scum is a profitable enterprise.
You cannot force respect. Respect is only earned, and no amount of bullying can change that. The only thing that bullying can force is the hiding of the contempt under a layer of fear.
This is eerily similar to the mentality of entitlement that we saw most recently in New Orleans.
These people don't have any respect for themselves, that is the problem.
We're rioting, burning, looting, causing mayhem......therefore, you should respect us.
Ummmmmm...............o.........k...................
Camp of the Saints
Hey, a cancer is a cancer. Islam has been an oncological growth since the illiterate caravan robber Mohammad first started spouting his gibberish. And I have no problem with violence. Without violent resistance to the armies of this degenerate "prophet" there wouldn't be a non-muslim territory anywhere in the Old World.
"Why in the world should any nation respect a group of murderous outlaws who behead people they disagree with?"
Nobody in France has been beheaded in decades.
To whom are you referring?
We have guns. That's the difference.
I agree and the only thing that should have been in short supply in NOLA was machine gun ammo.
Then it is far past time that they rose up and expelled the ones who do seek "extermination of infidels" from their society and culture. If they tolerate the mad dogs to thrive among them, they share the blame. Don't expect others to bother to distinguish the difference, when they won't unambiguously distinguish it themselves.
"Convince me there's not more to this that just teenagers causing trouble. I think the media is hiding some stuff."
That's about all there is to it.
It's Detroit's "Devil's Night - 1994" in the banlieu, so to speak.
The "more to it" is that nobody's been killed. This is a French disturbance between French people, following the rules. The young beurs are mad about certain things: maltreatment by the police, unemployment, being second-class citizens in their own country. But they are NOT murderous. They're expressing rage, not jihad.
The religious leaders have been calling for calm and trying to get the kids off the street.
There is a desire to play this as a Muslim Insurrection, the Jihad Comes to Paris, the New Front in the War On Terror.
But that is not the case.
If Islamist jihad comes to Paris, it will be in the form of bombs in the Metro or mass killings. It will not be in young men causing trouble in the streets and saying that the police are too rough (they are) or that they've got no jobs and are excluded (which is true).
So there is more to it, but it doesn't even rise to the level of the LA riots. There, the respect for life disappeared. On the 8th day of riots in Seine-St. Denis, nobody's dead.
