Brown Discussed Wardrobe During Katrina

Newly-released e-mails show former FEMA director Michael Brown discussing his wardrobe during the crisis caused by Hurricane Katrina.

A House panel has released 23 pages of internal e-mail offering additional evidence of a confused and distracted government response to Katrina, particularly from Brown, the former head of Federal Emergency Management Agency, at critical moments after the storm hit.

The e-mails show that Brown, who had been planning to step down from his post when the storm hit, was preoccupied with his image on television even as one of the first FEMA officials to arrive in New Orleans, Marty Bahamonde, was reporting a crisis situation of increasing chaos to FEMA officials.

"My eyes must certainly be deceiving me. You look fabulous — and I'm not talking the makeup," writes Cindy Taylor, FEMA's deputy director of public affairs to Brown on 7:10 a.m. local time on Aug. 29.

"I got it at Nordstroms," Brown writes back. "Are you proud of me? Can I quit now? Can I go home?" An hour later, Brown adds: "If you'll look at my lovely FEMA attire, you'll really vomit. I am a fashion god."

A week later, Brown's aide, Sharon Worthy, reminds him to pay heed to his image on TV.

This is the kind of stuff that passes for news at AP. Pathetic. Somebody's e-mail quips. A new low even for AP.

The character assassination continues. These supposed emails are released by a RAT congressman and published in the MSM. How do we know they're even real? Remember the CBS forgeries? And anyway, why isn't this Congressman being investigated by the ethics committee for releasing private emails?

Mike Brown had President Bush's confidence, and like he said, did a great job. FEMA did NOT fail during Katrina. Don't believe the MSM lies.

Think it is petty and disgusting to go here. . .private e -mails and we do not really know the 'tone' or cotext; nor do we need to; they should be kept private as privately as they can be, that is.

The Left are like vulchers. . .

Didn't Bill Clinton get a blowjob during a phone call about Bosnia?

This a good reminder to us to remember when you send an email or post to FR: "what would my mother say if she read this" and "how would my worst enemy use this against me?"

Or was it while Yassir Arafat waited outside? Or was that the cigar moment?

Meanwhile, Gov. Blanco sat on her thumb and actively prevented FEMA from entering her state to help.

Where are those stories?

My mom thinks Clinton is a god. And she understands that his sexual needs trump the petty desires of the nation and besides, it is a private matter.

Now if BUSH did it, it would be horribly offensive and he should resign.

That's what she would say.

I agree that there is character assassination going on, and that FEMA did not deserve the beating it took post-Katrina.

But Good Lord, friend, you have to be the most blind partisan to characterize Mike Brown's job performance as "great."

A great executive never allows the chief executive to look bad, no matter who's at fault. A great executive does not allow gnats and peons to frame the argument because he's three steps ahead.

Still... The emails seem pretty vain. I don't know if I'd be in a mood to joke around if I was in charge during that period. The emails may seem private, but when you are at work, especially the government, they are the property of your employer. I have a hard time sticking up for this guy although one could put it into the context of him getting ready to quit, he would have faired much better had he kicked ass as his final effort in office.

Why do you think e-mails sent either:

A) To or from Govt officials on Govt equipment or

B) To or from Govt officials that document the work they do in their official capacities

are private? They're certainly available through a FOIA request.
