I call Texas Motor Speedway "Bruton's Baby". Bruton Smith took his blueprint of Charlotte and ran with it all the way to Texas. While I haven't seen a race there yet, I can tell you from Bruton's other tracks to expect to be treated like royalty. There will be shuttle stops with plenty of shuttles to take you to where you want to go near the speedway.
Before you head out to Texas, there are some things you need to know:
Getting there
From Ft. Worth (East): Take I-35W north from Fort Worth. Exit on Highway 114 and turn under the overpass to the speedway. Alternate: Take I-35W to U.S. 287 North. Left on U.S. 287 to FM 156. Right on FM 156 to Highway 114. Right on Highway 114 to the speedway.
From Dallas (West): There are a variety of routes from Dallas to Texas Motor Speedway. You know me -- I say get out the map and find an alternate route. The following route is recommended by the speedway: North from Dallas on I-35 East to Denton. At the junction of I-35 East and I-35 West, head back south on I-35 West. Exit right on Highway 114 to the speedway.
From Denton: Take I-35 West south from Denton, exit right on Highway 114. Alternate: Take U.S. 380 West from Denton, turn left on FM 156 South to Highway 114. Left on Highway 114 to the speedway.
The Victory Lane Express offers fans round-trip transportation from the Tarrant County Community College Northwest Campus to the speedway for $10 per person on Nov. 5 and6. Drop-off and pick-up at the speedway will be in the facility's bus lot, located adjacent to Highway 114. Departures begin at 9 a.m. on race days with the first return trip scheduled 30 minutes after each race. For more information call (817) 215-8600.
What to Bring
Any cooler brought into the grandstands must measure no larger than 14" x 14" x 14" and contain no glass. You may bring alcoholic beverages into the grandstand areas. Only one cooler per ticketholder is allowed in the grandstands.
Bags such as backpacks, fannypacks, etc. are allowed, but are subject to inspection by security officials and can be no larger than 14 inches in all dimensions
Binoculars, seat cushions, scanners and cameras are allowed inside the Speedway.
Where to Camp and Park
There are only a few POPs (Privately Owned Property) near Texas Motor Speedway and they are on the backstretch on PR 4716 and Petty Place.
Speedway parking: Daily VIP parking is available, ranging from $25-$75, depending on the day. Express parking is available, ranging from $20-$40, depending on the day. Unreserved Event Day Parking at the track is free.
Speedway camping: Tent City - There are two areas on the east side for tent campers. Unreserved tent sites will be approximately 10 feet x 15 feet. No generators are allowed in Tent City areas. Fees rqange from $50-$75.
Unreserved camping is on the west side of the speedway for the Dickies 500 weekend races only. There will be 1,000 sites, approximately 20 feet x 40 feet, available on a first-come, first-served basis for a price of $50.
Don't miss...
Coca-Cola Zero Pre-race Extravaganza: Performances by country singer Sara Evans, "American Idol" semi-finalist Celena Rae, the Texas Christian University marching band, U.S. Army Golden Knights Parachute Team, U.S. Army Drill Team and RE/MAX Skydiving Team will highlight this event. A special surprise headline act will be announced race week to complete the all-star lineup. The show begins at 11 a.m. on race day.
Tyson Fun Walk: The Fun Walk will take place immediately after the O'Reilly Challenge Busch Series race on Nov. 5. Take a walk around Texas Motor Speedway with fans and NextelCup driver!
Chevy Speed Stampede: Interactive games, show cars, racing simulators, mobile exhibits, contests, prizes, racing and automotive merchandise. NASCAR Driver appearances are scheduled both evenings, along with bands and comedians. Nov. 4 and 5, 11:00 a.m. - midnight.
Stockyards Station: Located on East Exchange Ave. in Fort Worth. The Fort Worth Stockyards is now one of the most famous historical sites in Texas. It features lodging, unique shops, exciting night life, restaurants and entertainment. There is a live rodeo every weekend year-round. Additionally, the world's largest honky tonk and the best steaks in Texas make this place a must-see for race fans visiting the area. Also located there is the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame, the Stockyards Museum and the Depot for the Tarantula Steam Train -- the only operational steam train in Texas.
Jo Ann Hlavac is the producer of Laidbackracing.com, a fan site devoted to NASCAR tailgating. The opinions expressed are solely of the writer.
Note to Self: Do not take Truex; Do not take Truex, Do not take Truex, . . .
THX for da ping
I hear they've cancelled qualifying and just gave the pole to Newman.
Thanks for the tip. I'm going to change my FRFL picks...
Maybe not the best idea to schedule a Texas race on the opening weekend of Deer Season?
Here's a tip....... There are some great deals at souvenir ally. Every driver that is moving next season is selling stuff dirt-cheap. This means the Bobby Labonte rumors must be true, because some of his stuff was real cheap. There are alot of 3 and 5$ t-shirts and hats. 20 bucks will get you a few cool items.
Have fun!
I'm hoping to get some good pics & videos.
Looking forward to you posting pics after the race.
19th
Going any other day, Thurs-Sat, will give you a prelim and traffic is not bad. I always go in the north side, Dale Earnhardt Way, and go in gate 3. But that's just me.
Have fun, it's a blast!
