Snip: Enough plutonium to make dozens of nuclear bombs hasn't been accounted for at the UC-run Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico and may be missing, an activist group says in a new report.
There is no evidence that the weapons-grade plutonium has been stolen or diverted for illegal purposes, the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research said. However, the amount of unaccounted-for plutonium -- more than 600 pounds, and possibly several times that -- is so great that it raises "a vast security issue," the group said in a report to be made public today.
The institute, which is based in Takoma Park, Md., says it compared data from five publicly available reports and documents issued by the U.S. Energy Department and Los Alamos from 1996 to 2004 and found inconsistencies in them. It says the records aren't clear on what the lab did with the plutonium, a byproduct of nuclear bomb research at Los Alamos.

Professors must receive Islamic training
Snip: Tehran, Iran, Dec. 01 – A senior Iranian cleric has called for all university professors to undergo Islamic training by the clergy. Ayatollah Mohammad-Taghi Mesbah-Yazdi made the call while meeting officials at the Ministry of Health.
Mesbah-Yazdi, who is the ultra-conservative ideological mentor of hard-line President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, also said that a project was underway for Islamic clerics to check all university books to ensure that all “un-Islamic” literature are filtered.
“The Supreme Council for Cultural Revolution has thus far been indifferent to universities becoming Islamicised. All the organs of the Islamic Republic must be run according to fatwas (holy mandates) decreed by the religious jurisprudents. There is a project being carried out to change books in universities which involves clerics checking the books and picking up their mistakes”, the radical cleric said.
Mesbah Yazdi, an extremist even by the standards of Iran’s ayatollahs, is notorious for regularly advocating the use of suicide operations to fight “the enemies of Islam”.
