"Metra Train Hits Multiple Vehicle"

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "(CBS) ELMWOOD PARK A Metra train has hit multiple vehicles on Grand Avenue west of Harlem Avenue in Elmwood Park, injuring at least 13 people.

A Metra spokesman says the Metra North Central Service train heading to Antioch from downtown Chicago has struck numerous vehicles near the commuter rail's Elmwood Park station.

Five vehicles were hit by the train itself, and as many as a dozen were hit in a chain reaction.

Authorities say at least 13 people were injured, but no fatalities have been reported. Several people had to be extricated from vehicles. Four of the injured were transported to Gottlieb Memorial in Melrose Park, and hospital officials say they are expecting more injured to arrive. Three victims went to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood."

Thank you for the update.

It makes me sad, but then, I don't like these holidays, as it seems so much always goes wrong.

Latest info from a news conference that just concluded on the train incident:

15 injured, 3 critical. 12 injured in cars, from which the 3 critical injuries occurred. 3 non life threatening injuries on the train. Most eyewitness reports that I have heard indicate that the gates were functioning but traffic was backed up onto the crossing. I know this crossing rather well. It is one of the longest grade crossings in the area across a commuter line. Both the street (Grand Ave) and the rail line run on a slight NW-SE angle, with the rail line on a slightly more NW angle than the street. Total distance exceeds 150' from traffic gate to complete clearance on the opposite side. The train involved was an express traveling at 65-70mph prior to the engineer putting it into emergency stop. Engineer has 30 years of experience.

Shocking no one was killed when you see the video of the aftermath.
