The Venezuelan ambassador to Spain, Arévalo Méndez Romero, declared that Venzuela will sign with Spanish companies the contract for sale of military material it had worked out with Spain, despite the warnings of the United States. This was the rsponse of Méndez Romero, before a small group of journalists, to the United States ambassador, Eduardo Aguirre, who reminded him that the United States has to authorize the sale of 12 aircraft and eight patrol boats, because they include US technology. According to the Venezuelan ambassador, there is “no problem” in signing the agreement, which is already firm, because the US technological components affect only the aircraft and “there is enough technology in Europe to replace them.” The US ambassador to Spain, Eduardo Aguirre, declared in a meeting with journalists that he trusts that the sale of military material, composed of eight vessels and 12 aircraft, by the Spanish government to Venezuela will not take place. He expects that “in the long run, it won’t be done. The transaction, announced last February, amounts to 1,700,000,000 euros and is still awaiting signature. Aguirre also announced that the US government still has not decided if it will authorize Spain to sell aircraft that have US military technology to Venezuela.

This is my unauthorized translation of a piece in the Spanish press today. Looks like ol Hugo is still busy, aided by his buddy Zapatero of Spain.
I thought this whole matter had been resolved months ago, but apparently not. I can't imagine that we would be dumb enough to let Chavez have our technology. Spain is cruising for a bruising.
