Germans interrogated terrorist under deal with Syria: report
By DPA
Nov 20, 2005, 19:00 GMT
Hamburg - German interrogators were granted access three years ago to a terrorist in one of Damascus\' most dreaded jails
under a secret deal with Syria, the news magazine Der Spiegel said Sunday.
They were able to speak in 2002 with Mohammed Haidar Zammar, a Syrian who is believed to have a German passport, after he
had been captured by U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) agents in Morocco and removed to Syria, Spiegel said in its issue to
appear Monday.
In exchange, intelligence officials in Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder\'s office acceded to Syrian demands to quash the indictment
of two suspected Syrian spies. Berlin later accused Syria of reneging and continuing espionage in Germany in breach of the deal.
German government officials declined comment on the Spiegel report. A spokesman said only that all intelligence activities were
communicated to the parliamentary committees that monitor them.
The magazine said senior Syrian officials secretly visited Berlin in July 2002 to arrange the deal.
Zammar was believed to have been al-Qaeda boss Osama bin Laden\'s representative in the German port city of Hamburg and a
close friend of the three Hamburg Arab students who piloted hijacked jets in the September 11, 2001 attacks on New York and
Washington.
Captured at the end of 2001, Zammar has been held in the brutal Far Filastin Jail, a facility in the basement of the Syrian military
intelligence headquarters in Damascus, the magazine said. Amnesty International says torture takes place routinely there.
At the November 2002 meeting, German federal police and domestic and foreign intelligence officers travelled to Damascus and
were told by Zammar that his main contribution had been to convince one of the pilots, Marwan al-Shehhi, to join the \'jihad\'
cause.
He had also arranged for Murat Kurnaz, a man from the German port city of Bremen who has been in the U.S. Guantanamo Bay
detention camp since 2002, to travel to Afghanistan to join the Taliban.
Spiegel said the interview findings had been kept top secret and had not been shared with prosecutors investigating Islamists in
Germany.
Prosecutors had withdrawn the indictments of the two alleged Syrian agents on instructions from the German federal justice
ministry, but a second German visit to Damascus never took place because the Syrians had broken the bargain.
It was meanwhile reported that a German city was among the possible venues to be used by U.N. chief investigator Detlev Mehlis
to interview six senior Syrian officers as part of the probe into former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq Hariri\'s assassination.
Arab newspapers said Cologne was being considered as a neutral location. Mehlis comes from Germany.

Israeli airforce jets bombed the headquarters of the Hizbullah in southern Lebanon this evening, in response to the terrorist group's shelling of northern Israel earlier today.
A resident of Kiryat Shemonah, along the Lebanese border, told Arutz Sheva this evening that the sounds of artillery fire continue at this time.
"The ambulance and police [phone] systems collapsed, they are unreachable, apparently because of the large amount of calls," the resident said.

FBI launches probe on hate fliers
The FBI wants to know who is responsible for threatening fliers found in several Ada County neighborhoods and business districts.
The message is causing concern in Boise's Muslim community.
The fliers found in west Boise and Meridian earlier this month claim to be written by a Muslim angry with Americans -- but members of Boise's Muslim community say the message is poorly written -- and not believable.
They say the papers appear to be pieces of propaganda aimed at dividing cultures.
Jameel Almudahf is a Muslim who moved to the United States from Iraq more than a decade ago. He says these fliers -- with Arabic messages urging Muslims to unite -- are misleading.
I think this is propaganda. That's it, Almudahfr said. This is not the picture of Islam. This is not the way to present Islam.
The words read "death to America -- death to Israel" -- with images of president bush and al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden -- a man mainstream Muslims denounce. (snip)

YUMA, ARIZ. --When Border Patrol agents here meet for "the muster,"
their gathering before the night shift, they've got a lot to talk about.
On a recent evening, shift commander Tony Martinez ticked off a
laundry list of events from the night before. Scores of illegal
immigrants had rushed the 8-foot metal fence that separates San
Luis, Ariz., from Mexicali, Mexico--a tactic known as the "banzai run."
A routine checkpoint stop turned up 251 bundles of marijuana in a
rental car. And a report out of Miami indicated that some illegals were
getting plastic surgery on their fingertips so their prints wouldn't be
recognized by the FBI's database. "Remember Casa Grande," Martinez
warned, referring to an incident when an agent found three axes and
three loaded guns in an illegal immigrant's duffel bag. "And please, be
careful."

INVASION USA: ARMED STANDOFF ON RIO GRANDE

Uniformed Mexicans with guns, bulldozer seize drug-bust truck
from Border Patrol
U.S. Border Patrol agents were backed down this week by armed men,
dressed in what appeared to be Mexican military uniforms and
carrying military weapons, who seized a captured dump truck filled
with marijuana from the U.S. agents and dragged it across the border
into Mexico with a bulldozer.
The border incident occurred Thursday evening when Border Patrol
agents attempted to pull over a dump truck on Interstate 10 in
Hudspeth County, Texas. The driver fled from the agents, exiting the
freeway and driving toward the Rio Grande which runs within 2 miles
of the interstate in this portion of West Texas.
The driver abandoned the truck after it became stuck in the river bed,
escaping into Mexico.
Agents called for reinforcement from the Texas state troopers and
Hudspeth County sheriff and began unloading the haul estimated to
have been nearly 3 tons when everything changed.
Officers "started to retrieve the bundles when the armed subjects
appeared," said Agent Ramiro Cordero, Border Patrol spokesman.
According to Hudspeth County Chief Deputy Mike Doyal, the dump
truck driver returned with armed men, some of whom drove "official
looking vehicles with overhead lights." Some of those armed, Doyal
told the El Paso Times, appeared to be Mexican soldiers in uniform
with military weapons.
"It's a very serious incident," Doyal said. "We are very fortunate ... no
one got hurt. Everyone had the presence of mind not to cause an
international incident, or start shooting."
As WorldNetDaily has reported, there are widespread reports of
U.S.-trained Mexican commandos, called the Zetas, making
cross-border runs into U.S. territory in military-style vehicles, armed
with automatic weapons.
The Zetas were trained as elite commandos by U.S. forces to combat
the drug cartels, but they have switched sides and are working for the
drug smugglers in the border area posing a special hazard to
American law enforcement and Border Patrol agents, according to a
U.S. Justice Department memo. Under the control of reputed drug
kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, the Zetas are conducting a
bloody war for control of the entire southern border in an effort to
secure a monopoly on drug-smuggling and people-smuggling routes.
As both sides faced off, a bulldozer appeared from the Mexico side of
the river and was used by the armed men to pull the dump truck and
the two-thirds of the marijuana that had not yet been unloaded into
Mexico. The bulldozer, Doyal said, is believed to be used regularly to
make makeshift crossings over the Rio Grande.
The "armed encounter with drug smugglers," as Cordero described it,
is under investigation. No confirmation was made as to whether or not
the "soldiers" belonged to the Mexican military.
