Iraqis Charged in (German) Plot to Kill Former PM

Germany has charged three Iraqis with plotting to kill former Iraqi
Prime Minister Ayad Allawi during a state visit to Germany last year,
federal prosecutors announced Wednesday.
The three are suspected of being members of the radical Islamic
group Ansar al-Islam. Prosecutors said they filed the case Nov. 10
with a state court in the southern city of Stuttgart.
Frauke Scheuten, a spokeswoman for federal prosecutors in
Karlsruhe, said there was no maximum sentence for the conspiracy
charge. The charge of membership in a foreign terrorist organization
carries a maximum sentence of 10 years.
Jordanian terrorist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, leader of al-Qaida in Iraq,
is believed to have played a key role in the group. The United States
has offered a $25 million reward for al-Zarqawi's capture the same
amount as for Osama bin Laden.

Vienna police investigating cause of explosion in building overnight
Federal counterterrorism authorities on Wednesday were examining the wreckage of a Vienna building that sustained heavy damage in a suspicious explosion overnight, officials said.
Austria's national anti-terrorism squad was deployed after firefighters found batteries, cables and other items that suggested a homemade explosive device may have been detonated.
No one was injured in the blast, which also damaged several vehicles parked in front of the residential building, located next to a mosque and a Turkish-owned business.
The explosion occurred at about 2:40 a.m. (0140 GMT), blowing out windows and heavily damaging the first floor of the dwelling, police said. As of midday, investigators had filled 58 plastic bags with fragments of what appeared to be an explosive device, police spokesman Walter Hladik said.
