Baptists and Water Distribution
11/1/2005 | KeithHinson

Posted on 11/01/2005 5:35:12 PM PST by KeithHinson

I originally posted this as a reply but am new to this web site. Here it is as a new thread:
Volunteers working with the Alabama Baptist Disaster Relief Unit honored the request of the host pastor to set aside canned water with an Anheuser-Busch logo. At no time was anyone deprived of water. In fact, there was a huge surplus of bottled and canned water available at the Clewiston relief site. There was never any disruption in the supply of water being given out to members of the public who continued to receive food, water and other types of assistance from Alabama Baptist Disaster Relief workers.
It is an absolute falsehood to suggest -- as many irresponsible bloggers have -- that the Baptist volunteers withheld the basic needs of life from Floridians impacted by the hurricane. Contrary to misinterpretations of news reports, no one was denied access to water.
One may disagree with the strong stand that many Southern Baptists take against the consumption of alcohol. One may even regard such opposition to alcohol as offensive.
But it's impossible to say truthfully that this conviction caused any inconvenience or shortage for victims of Hurricane Wilma. The facts are exactly the opposite.
The fact is that virtually all of the Southern Baptist Disaster Relief volunteers serve selflessly -- taking time away from employment and family to minister in the name of Jesus Christ. Churches such as First Baptist Church, Clewiston, graciously serve as host sites -- providing a place where food, water and other necessities of life may be obtained by anyone in need -- without regard to religion or any other demographic consideration.

I simply read the bible for what it actually says, not for what some major denomination reads into it.

Be holding yourselves back from every form of perniciousness (Kenneth S. Wuest, The New Testament: An Expanded Translation)

Nothing on what it "looks like" (and the argument about what it looks like is already a far stretch). This is talking about the verious ways that perniciousness can work.

The apparent misunderstanding here is one of the dangers of leaning on an antique translation for one's theology, without having the antique tongue as your first language.

IF the NRA was to set up relief help (HA), would you approve of them handing out coffee in cups that say "Guns Kill"??

That's a weak one. The cans don't say "Drink our beer."

Most likely due to logistics and the fact that they had plenty of water to give out, but they did not make any move to take it.

Time line here please, and also status of the ongoing situation of drinking water scarcity and what ever ultimately became of the 'evil' water.

Would I give out water that said "ISlamic Charities" one it? Would I give out water that said Bottled in IRAN? Would I give out water that said "A product of the Peoples Republic of China" Yes, I would.

Not to mention consumption. We had people drinking from the river down here in Mississippi, full well knowing it was contaminated, due to intense thirst.

Cool Water

All day I've faced the barren waste
without the taste of water..... cool water
Ole Dan and I with throats burned dry
and souls that cry for water.... cool, clear water

The nights are cool and I'm a fool
Each star's a pool of water.... cool, clear water
And with the dawn I'll wake and yawn
and carry on to water.... cool, clear water

The shadows sway and seem to say
tonight we pray for water.... cool, clear water
And way up there He'll hear our prayer
and show us where there's water.... cool, clear water

Keep a movin' Dan don't you listen to him Dan
He's the devil, not a man he spreads the burnin' sand with water
Say Dan can't you see that big green tree
where the water's runnin' free, it's waiting there for you and me

And water.... cool, clear water

Dan's feet are sore he's yearnin' for
Just one thing more than water.... cool, clear water
Like me I guess he'd like to rest
Where there's no quest for water.... cool, clear water

Those who judge the Baptists for this act should answer this: Which would you do? Stick with your religious convictions in the face of criticism and judgment? Or ignore your convictions due to fear of criticism and judgement?

I'm not gonna judge them at all except to say thank you SBC for your tireless efforts here. But one thing that I can assure you of, if those men had been in our shoes after Katrina, they not only would have passed it out, they would have been drinking it and gladly and with thanks.

I think it is great that someone is standing up for their beliefs. About time. There was plenty of water and no one went without.

I am Southern Baptist and I think it is great that they were standing up for their beliefs. Since no one went without, what is the fuss about?

Yes, I would.

Nice. You would, but you didn't, did you?

How many bottles of water have you given out to hurricane victims?

And yet you have the repulsive temerity to criticize those who have sacrificed time away from work and their families and homes to give out tens of thousands of bottles of water to thristy people.

Calling those who have worked so hard to provide relief to so many "bigots," while sitting on your ass at a keyboard.

Spare me your righteous indignation.

thank you SBC for your tireless efforts here

and thank the Lord that the situation didn't arise that they had nothing left but the Busch water such they would have been forced to choose between quitting or violating their conscience. at least in the time line of the report. i would be curious about what followed in the subsequent days.

This time, and at least within the time frame of the report. There needs to be a more intelligent high level policy for the future (as, all Busch water goes to the Red Cross).

They would not have had to choose. Iven David ate the Holy Bread when he was hungry. The Lord clearly understands our needs.
