Why Reid did it
The Corner at The National Review Online ^ | November 1, 2005 | Byron York

Perhaps the best explanation for the Democrats' decision to virtually shut down the Senate today can be found in one passage from CIA leak prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald's news conference last Friday:

This indictment is not about the war. This indictment's not about the propriety of the war. And people who believe fervently in the war effort, people who oppose it, people who have mixed feelings about it should not look to this indictment for any resolution of how they feel or any vindication of how they feel....The indictment will not seek to prove that the war was justified or unjustified. This is stripped of that debate, and this is focused on a narrow transaction. And I think anyone who's concerned about the war and has feelings for or against shouldn't look to this criminal process for any answers or resolution of that.

Fitzgerald's statement, and his decision to confine the indictment of Lewis Libby to charges of lying and obstruction, threatened to dash the Democrats' hope of using the CIA leak case as an opportunity to re-debate the reasons for going to war in Iraq. So the party, or at least its leaders in the Senate, has decided to use another route, the shutdown of the Senate, as a way to achieve that goal.

What possible good is it to re-debate the issue of why we went to war?

Here's what the RATS would say:

1. Convince all the members of families who have lost relatives in Iraq that their loved ones died in vain.

2. Demoralize our military and make it harder to recruit people to serve.

3. Vindicate the accusations made by our good friends, Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez, when they call the United States an "imperialist" country.

4. Discredit our efforts against terrorist so maybe we can get hit again, which will make George Bush look bad.

5. Demonstrate the wisdom of the UN and global socialists because they supported Saddam Hussein with kickbacks.

These are just some of the wonderful benefits we get by undermining the efforts of our troops in Iraq, who we support wholeheartedly.

It's time for the President and the Pubbies to take the gloves off. We'll survive even if we lose. The Dims, if shown for what they truly are and what they stand for, could crash completely.

We can credit talk show hosts, FR and other efforts as we appreciate the work everyone has done to support out side. But, don't forget the election in 2004 was won by individual efforts from all of us in getting votes from people we know and influence. The media and Democrats failed to apply the power they thought they had, but didn't.

More of the same is coming. Each of these BS attempts to sway voters has to be countered and defeated.

I agree, but notice how the media has censored so much of what happened on 911. The American public has a very short attention span. Democrats are hoping that most people will forget the connection between 911 and what is happening in Iraq. The media fails to accurately report the good news there. I hope that the sane in this country out number democrats come next election day.

Heck, the Clinton administration is ancient history by most public opinion and Washington standards. The beauty is we don't have to go back that far to nail the actual senators perpetrating this farce.

"How about Republicans finally grow a spine and support the military effort and remind the left of a few things:"

Worth adding to your list is the fact that Joe Wilson, a has been nobody, was given a task, with his wife's help, by the CIA to do a job he was in no way qualified for and without being required to sign the secrecy agreement routine for such tasks at the CIA.

He then fabricated a story of what the task turned up and went on a leftwing-sponsored media tour writing and speaking about it that has lasted two years and is sure to last at least through the 2006 elections unless he is widely exposed for the lying fraud he is.

It is a fact that there was a conspiracy involving the DNC, the MSM and the CIA to discredit a sitting president on matters of war and national security.

I say let's have the hearings...AS LONG AS ALL THE FACTS ARE REVEALED, and the Democrats aren't allowed to spin and contol things the way they got used to doing when they were in charge and have been allowed to continue to get away with as if they're still in charge.

Democrats have only one agenda and it drives everything they do and say. That agenda is to regain their power over the American people, and I believe they will stop at nothing to achieve it.

Yes, Rush is on a very positive roll. He has been right over and over and I think that too is getting to the lefties.

Have you noticed the tone in Rush's voice? It is high and energetic like the Rush of old. I think he is thriving on this and he should. He called it.

Rush is an informative entertainment show. We accept that. This is making his ratings go through the roof.

Most of use that listen to Rush correctly put his words though our BS filters, just like any other talking head. But guess what, Rush is still holding somewhere around 98.6% right.

It is very satisfying to me because after the last election of Bush the lefties realized Rush had more power and persuasion then they thought. This stuff will just add to the their misery.

It didn't work!

It made Reid look like the fool he is. They can't get by with lying like they used to.

I hope so - maybe a few more kicks in the rear might toughen them up a little more?

If we don't let them know that we are disgusted by their behavior so far, they'll simply continue down their merry little road and nothing will change and we could lose our Constitutional Republic.

It seems to me that the last time someone was accused of "shutting down the governemnt" they lost. Clinton did the accusing last time and the people bought it that Republicans "shut" the government down. NOW's the time for the Republicans to highlight just WHO wants to shut down and slow down the government...trying to put off Alito's hearings until 2006...this latest "stunt" that stopped Senate business. IF the Republicans are smart (and I have my doubts about the Republican Senators) they should get out in front of this and portray it as it is....the Dems are shutting down of government like spoiled brats.
