DNR Officer Kills Injured Deer

ALMA, Mich. -- A deer smashed through two glass panes and entered a hospital, stopping at a first-floor nurse's station before being tied up and removed from the building.

The animal, cut and bloodied, burst into Gratiot Medical Center about noon Monday, said David Koutz, the hospital's director of facilities.

A nurse blocked the deer's path into a hallway leading to patient rooms, while other staffers closed patient doors.

Staffers covered the deer's head with a blanket, calming it enough for them to tie its legs with ropes, place it on a cart and get it out of the building.

An officer from the state Department of Natural Resources later killed the seriously injured deer.

No people were injured, and the only damage to the hospital was the broken window panes, Koutz told the Morning Sun of Mount Pleasant.

Several years ago, in the fall, two (2) deer ran into the all-glass wall of the building in which I work. They both broke their necks--died in very short order. I would not have believed it had I not seen them lying right where they fell. Our manager was in his office at the time with his back to the window and about had a heart attack at the moment of impact. As it is with the building--glass all around--the glare of the sun leaves clear, picture-perfect images on the glass. The deer were trapped in an alcove area and in a panic to get away, ran right into the glass.

Nope. "get" works for me. "calming" & "place" are present tense verbs.
