India Warns Pakistan Over Delhi Bombs

India warns Pakistan over Delhi bombs

(Filed: 31/10/2005)

India suspects "external" forces of carrying out Saturday's bomb attacks in Delhi and Manmohan Singh, the Indian prime minister, has hinted at Pakistani involvement.

Mr Singh told Pervez Musharraf, the Pakistani president, about the "external linkages" when Gen Musharraf telephoned to offer his condolences for the 59 people who died in the bombings.

During the phone call, Mr Singh reminded his opposite number of Pakistan's "commitment to ending cross-border terrorism".

Up until now, Indian officials have not publicly assigned blame for the bombings. However, Indian commentators have pointed the finger at Pakistani-based Islamic groups fighting to force India to give up its claim to the contested Kashmir region.

The attacks came at a particularly sensitive moment following India and Pakistan's agreement to partially open the military frontier that divides Kashmir in order to assist the passage of aid into Pakistan's earthquake afflicted regions. The border deal was finalized at the weekend.

In 2001, Indian accusations that Pakistan - which had recently aquired nuclear weapons - was involved in a bomb attack on the Indian parliament, led the rival states to the brink of war. But they pulled back and both sides now appear intent on peace in spite of the latest attacks.

The Pakistani government has condemned the bombings, and Musharraf on Monday called the bombings in New Delhi "a dastardly terrorist attack".

He told reporters his country would fully cooperate in any investigation, and said: "Pakistan stands with India on this act of terrorism which has been perpetrated in New Delhi."

Mushy has enough problems trying to kill off a few hundred thousand nut cases in his own country.

It's hard to believe that the Pakistani government was behind these attacks. Musharraf has moved the country in a different direction, albeit slowly, and he'd have nothing to gain from this.

The attacks may well have come from groups based in Pakistan, but that's quite different. Nobody believes that Pakistan has even conquered its own territory.

If there were no Pak aided jihad factories aimed solely at creating violence in India, what leverage can Pak hope to have against India?

There're many who believe that Mush has lots to gain by claiming deniability even as the jihadi groups operating openly in Pakistan seek to blackmail India into yielding some ground.

What ground does Pakistan want India to yield? They've already essentially agreed to the existing division of Kashmir, and are beefing up the fences to prevent infiltration.

While they are hardly trusting neighbors yet, there has been increased cooperation in recent months. There is just no reason to suspect Pak government support for these terrorist attacks. There's no motive.

You obviously understand very little about that part of the world. Mush never agreed to the division of kashmir. Listen to what he said today..that this is an opportunity to "resolve" the dispute. Meaning.. give us what we want on kashmir or else such blasts will continue. This is blackmail.. You are a sucker if you dont get this.

I wonder what China would do if India would clean off some terrorists in Pakistan. Could there be a possibility for China to intervene and send troops to support Pakistan?

Yes that possibility exists. In fact even the US would try to put some sort of sanctions to stop such a conflict. Since even the US keeps lecturing India to "peacefully" resolve outstanding disputes with Pak. Thats the height of hyprocrisy to me. But I blame Indian leaders who dont have the spine to show the peaceniks the finger.. and do whats right for India's security.

Hmmmmmmm....good question. Indeed I wonder what they want India to yield?

Ever heard of a place called Kashmir? The "unfinished agenda"?

BTW its India thats building the fence in Kashmir not Pakistan. Pakistan is opposing the construcion and regularly carries out border shelling to disrupt the fencing work.

There could be but I dont think they would intervene directly.

The possibility of US sending military supplies to support Pakistan also exists.

It doesn't matter if Musharraf knew about it or not. The US government has a policy that holds governments accountable, as we do with Iran or the Palestinians, if they allow groups to operate that kill innocents. Musharraf cannot have it both ways. Either he cracks down on the groups or he is responsible for acts done by them.
