My son it 16 going on 35.....
He is bored to death in the sorry excuse that passes for Public school in this sorry state. Its all well and good to say home school or send to private school with grants and such... the sad fact is there is boat loads of competition for those grants.... and they are awarded... well lets just say that there are other factors other that ability that come into play here.... I don't want to come off sounding too bitter.
How many kids do you know that can do calculus (first and second derivations) in their heads and come up with the right answer and not use a calculator....
so he comes home he is bored... I taught him C++ in less than 5 weeks.... he is now programing his own game... Yet the school holds him back.....
I fear for him when he gets to college....

I feel for your son, and for you. That must be so very frustrating for you both.
My daughter is only in 2nd grade and is already bored. I'm not claiming that she is some type of prodigy, she isn't, but much of what is being taught, she knew in kindergarten.
I understand your issues on private school, it was not an option for us either - so we moved out of a rotten school district to a much better one, though by no means perfect, in another state. We do what we can at home, and the teachers are very supportive of our efforts and very willing to help.....but all of our hands are being tied by the higher ups at the district.

If your son is at a highly advanced level, is there a way he can test out or do correspondence courses through the district to get his credits to graduate early?

Have you looked at your community college? Many have programs that allow High School students to enroll in a two year Assoc. degree program in lieu of High School.

People must apologize a lot where you live.

I fear for him when he gets to college.... Why? College is the first place where he can begin taking classes that are geared towards his intellect. He can drift toward the hard science classes (Physics, Engineering, Math, CompSci, etc.) and take minimal pansy classes. That would probably thrill him.
But is he ready to compete? If you can prepare him outside of his pathetic school for the levels of competition, he'll do fine.
