We have the same problem in Maryland. Baltimore (and Prince Georges county) basically decides our statewide (and national) elections. I live in Baltimore though, so perhaps my letters might carry a bit more weight, but I doubt it.
It's all about rejecting anything conservative with these people, no matter where you come from in the state. I don't have any illusions to the contrary. I still think it's a good idea to write to my senators though. It's the same concept as the "Chinese water torture": A persistant drip drip of contrary opinion can be rather annoying, when done consistently over time. ;)
Ok I agree with on the point that even Durbin is in need of contact so here is what I sent him.
SCOTUS VOTE.
As a resident of Illinois I urge you to ask questions you may have and accept the answers you get for what they are during the upcoming hearings for this nominee.
I am among the many people in this state and this country that have grown weary of the endless stalling of votes in the Senate. If you oppose this nominee, then by all means VOTE NO and explain to us WHY you are voting no in NO uncertain terms. That way we can all judge your record when it is time for us to vote for you, or against you.
Sir, you were sent to Washington to vote on our behalf. Do So. Please do not resort to the tactic of stalling a vote with a filibuster. The time for 'taking your ball and going home' is over. Cast your vote and accept the results.
To claim to be a Democrat when you oppose the vote is PURE hypocrisy. I offer to you that it is time to take notice of what it is you oppose.
So which is it? Do you oppose the vote or the nominee? Its time to do your job, Sir. Otherwise you risk losing it.
I urge you to vote and I urge you to vote YES.
