We don't. I hope. But the Dems love to make a point about religion. It happened in Robert's confirmation hearing. There are some elements who are suspicious about anything having to do with the Catholic church. Some here on FR have claimed the Pope is the anti-christ.

It's just something to expect to be used to spook people.

If Alito is rejected, I hope W sends Janice Rogers Brown next.

There will always be people who don't like other denominations. In any case, if Dems try to bring the issue, I don't think many Evangelicals will bite. On the other hand, Catholics may get offended and will even move to Republican party even more.

Fact is too many Dem voters are "Catholic" will THE Demrat Senators risk insulting them by Catholic bashing? Bush is
more likely to get a "Catholic" past the DEM Senators the left will have a harder time bashing a Catholic than they would have going against an Evangelical who's votes they usually never get.

They'll no doubt obssess on the Catholic issue. Probably the reason there are so many Catholics is that Catholics of the generation now in their 50s grew up under a much more rigorously rational, law-oriented Church and had considerable formation in things like debating and philosophy. Going into the legal field was a natural, and there are probably disproportionate numbers of Catholics in that field. (Incidentally, I don't think this is still true - the modern Church, unfortunately, is as soft and squishy intellectually as every other Christian church).
