Pastor electrocuted during baptism [Texas]
Sydney Morning Herald ^ | October 31, 2005 | AP

A US pastor performing a baptism was electrocuted inside his Texas church when he grabbed a microphone while partially submerged, a church employee said.

The Reverend Kyle Lake, 33, was standing in water up to his shoulder in a baptismal in front of 800 people at University Baptist Church when he was electrocuted yesterday, said Jamie Dudley, a church business administrator.

Doctors in the congregation unsuccessfully performed chest compressions for 40 minutes, Dudley said.

The woman Lake was baptising was not injured, Dudley said.

Pastors at University Baptist Church routinely use a microphone during baptisms, Dudley said.

"He was grabbing the microphone so everyone could hear," Dudley said.

"It's the only way you can be loud enough."

About 800 people attended the morning service, which was larger than normal because it was homecoming weekend at nearby Baylor University, Dudley said.

Lake, who had a wife and three children, had been at the church for nine years, the last seven as pastor, Dudley said.

Hey,

The Big Guy just reached out and took him home.

He died in the saddle. Reason to celebrate ( I'm Irish).

Thats the problem with doing the Lords work.
Every thing you teach may have to be demonstrated, on the spot!! This is a good reminder that the Lord is always
with us and can intervene at any time, any time at all.

Bless him and his family. May they all receive the kindness of heaven.

Something is wrong with this story. I would have thought that they would all have dropped to their knees and prayed. No mention that.

"Some people just deal with tragedy with humor."

That is true and some either don't get that or they are simply trying to appear "holier-than-thou".

What happened to this pastor-in-a-tub is indeed a tragedy and I think it was more a case of absent-mindedness than stupidity. Years ago, I rented a hotel room with a hot tub and before I got into it, I put my portable radio on the edge of it so I could listen to it while I sat in there. After about a half hour of soaking, I came to the sudden realization that if this radio (which was plugged into a wall outlet) was to fall into the tub, I'd probably be a dead man! So I very carefully (but quickly) got out of the tub and moved the radio a safe distance away.

SO this kind of thing could happen to any one of us.

I do want to go on record that if I ever was to die a tragic death, I give full permission for others here to make puns about me, nominate me for the Darwin award and come up with other witticisms that might apply to the circumstances my sudden demise. I would expect nothing less!

All of us are going to go sooner or later. I'd rather go out with a whimper than with a bang, but I don't think I have much choice in the matter.

I would wager that there is a University Baptist Church in Lubbock, Dallas, College Station, Austin, and any other place that has a University in their city.

I agree with your views on being able to joke about death.

I tell everyone that in my twenties I didn't think I would ever die.In my thirties I hoped to be found dead with a twenty-one year old girl on top of me.In my forties I hoped to be found dead with a fishing pole in my hand. Now approaching fifty I just hope to not die at work.

Yeah. Someting is wrong.

First of all it happened at the University Baptist Church in Waco, Texas,

Secondly, the church took this pretty hard.Perhaps foul play may not have been ruled out yet.

Their usual web site is down, even the cached pages have been wiped off google, and they put up a holding page:

http://www.ubcwaco.org/2004/ubc_holder.html

This morning, Sunday October 30th, our pastor Kyle Lake was involved in an accident during a baptism and was transported by EMS to a nearby hospital. Kyle passed away around 11:30am. Not only did we lose a pastor but we've lost our friend. Funeral services are pending and we will update the website as soon as we have more information.
There will be a gathering tonight at 8pm at First Baptist Church Waco which is located on the Corner of 5th and Clay. This is a chance for reflection, an opportunity to be with friends and to pray. There will be counselors available if anyone needs to talk to anyone.

We are confident that Kyle is in heaven today because of his trust in Jesus Christ as his Savior.

“And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. “ -1 John 5:11-13

Please continue to keep the Lake family in your prayers.

Thank you,
UBC

While interest in this story is surging, we do need to suppress it on account of some people having short fuses.

You mean we should reverse the polarity?
